personally, i think for starters, learning about composition is more useful than buying expensive equipment great photographers can take great pictures even with consumer type cameras however, even with expensive gears, if one doesnt have the skills for it, it will just be a waste that's another reason why i didnt go with DSLR (other than budget reason) i want to improve on my composition skills before upgrading the camera (the autox theory) fast driver + slow car = fast slow driver + fast car = slow fast driver + fast car = really fast

Any one of those choices would be fine - It's all about personal preference. I don't know much about Nikon so I can't say much about the D80. I have an XTi and it is perfectly fine for me. Supposedly it's not built as well as a 30d and has a lighter, smaller feel while the 30d feels builkier.
IMO, the biggest reason one would get a 30d over an XTi is because of ergonomics. If your main concern is image quality, the cheapest camera with the features/feel you want would be the best choice. I'm certain that 99.9% of people would not be able to tell the difference between a picture taken by an XTi or one taken by a 30d.

I think learning with a Rebel Xti is the way to go, and you can change cameras as you progress on how to operate and use a SLR. I also have a Rebel Xti, and im a beginner too. I find it to be a simpler camera to operate in terms of a SLR.

Blam should charm in on this, he has owned both xti and 30d for a period of time
I have only played with the Xti for a few times, I don't think you will be disappointed with any DSLR if you never had one b4, because they are pretty amazing cameras compared to most point and shoot but I personally like the size of the 30D body and the magnesium makes it feel more solid

right, as the image quality is mostly depended on the lens I think learning with a Rebel Xti is the way to go, and you can change cameras as you progress on how to operate and use a SLR. I also have a Rebel Xti, and im a beginner too. I find it to be a simpler camera to operate in terms of a SLR.
the Xti is no simpler than a 30D it is just smaller with some lower specs

you may want to check costco in the states from time to time. The xti has a lot cheaper down there. They have offers with extra lenses, bag, etc.

You can definitely use your costco card in the states. I've done it many times.
Right now, Costco canada is offering a Rebel XT kit that comes with 2 lenses for 579.99. It might not have the fancy automatic dust removal etc...but it might still be worth it to start out with this kit.

Where do you see the XT with two lenses for 579? I see it going for 750...
Hmm, i'm confused with their site... is it 750 after u take 170 off or do u take 170 off the price...
