Scans surface from Japan

Where many automotive sites had their hopes up for an all new, next generation RX-8, the spotted mule was instead an RX-8 facelift which is scheduled for a Detroit debut in just over a week time at the North American International Auto Show.

Ten days after the surfacing of those spy photos a Japanese magazine's front cover surfaced on the internet clearly showing the updated RX-8, but the image itself was of very low quality. Yesterday however, Mazda mad Ahura of Mazda-Madness.nl found larger scans of the facelifted RX-8.

So now we know what the faelift will consist of, a new front fascia with adjusted grille, wider headlamps and the foglights have been placed higher while the LED rear lights have received a rounder look. The pictured RX-8 is an RS version with new 19 inch alloy wheels, Recaro seats, rear spoiler. Bilstein suspension which will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon tuner show on January 10.

They kind of remind me of the Altima SE-R wheels though.

Official pics from Mazda

Mazda plans on releasing the updated RX-8 in Detroit, which we reported last week.  But the speculation then was that the car would be North America-market only.

The automaker quelled that rumor this morning by releasing two images of the new car, which is is now going to debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Japan's SEMA, which starts tomorrow.

An interesting twist here, though, is that the rendering that was leaked in a Japanese auto mag, which our report last week was about, was actually right.  A new front grill, headlights, and fogs make an appearance up front, and new LED rings out back.

Autoblog/World Car Fans is reporting this is the Japan only RS version but styling cues are expected to reach the standard RX-8 debut at the Detroit Auto show:

According to World Car Fans, the vehicle you see above is the JDM-only RX-8 RS that's scheduled to be unveiled this week at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Japan's version of our own aftermarket SEMA Show. In advance of the car's debut, Mazda was nice enough to release two images of the RX-8 RS with its fresh face and updates, some of which we may see in a few days on the standard RX-8 at the Detroit Auto Show.

mmm i like, except the rear doesn't look as nice as the current tails..
changes are small and subtle, so this really is a face lift and not an entirely new rx8 Tongue

Yup. Says facelift in the thread title. Usually nothing too drastic.

Not sure what to make of this.  I like the wheels .... and the colour (blue)   Grin

The front show too much of a happy smiley face... not really feeling the fender vents, either...  the taillights are too reminiscent of the skyline.  I like the current tails more   Wink
