It didn't turn out the way I imagined it at all I will try light tubes next time. Light sources are: -two handheld flash units -in that shot, manually triggered 8-10 times total around different spots on the car |

Tried that too. It's also about the timing....because my flashes are slow to recharge, I need to wait for each triggering of the flashes and that usually takes up a lot of time (out of the 20-30 seconds that I have).
What I *could* try next time is to put it up against a white backdrop and aim the flashes up there....that would probably work to halo it better.

use a truck, or high beam, i think a external flash is just not powerful enough to fill the back of the car

Not my car, but we shot extensively tonight on my buddy's car:  Not the greatest one, but it's the only one that I have on my camera as he shot with his camera (he has a 5D) mainly and I set up the lights. This was only a test shot that I fired with my camera. Maybe more to come later  |
