P5 turbo kits are so cheap?

No experience. Just commenting. Ask... damn I forgot his username. Chris, he has a boosted Protege. Somebody else should know.

Well compared to a turbo kit for a 3, you are looking at $4000ish.

Try BCProtege.net? I think that is their website. I forget now.

BCProtege.net

There are a few boosted cars on that forum. You could also try sending Falango on this forum a PM.

Personally, I wouldn't want to buy a turbo kit off Ebay.

All I gotta say, is you get what you pay for.  No name BOV that is a knock off of the HKS SSQV.  Never heard of "JDM" T3/T4, though it's a popular and appropriate size for our motors.  No engine management included, so add in another $800+ for that.  The description says it's the adjustable BOV......but it's not.  My first impression is a kit like that could be a big headache.  I'd honestly get one from a company that's proven and specific to their applcations, like HiBoost.  HiBoost probably doesn't have a great reputation right now with this club because of all the trouble MonsterJ is going through, but they are known to have incredibly slow customer service.  I had issues contacting them in regards to parts, turn around time was way too high.  With turbo kits, you can't cheap out, you need to get quality parts, or you will pay for it in the end (repairs, replacement parts, time, labor, etc).

How much boost are you planning on running?  Auto.....5 speed?  Stock motor......plan to build a motor??  Lots of variables you need to think about.  I bet a kit like that ebay kit wouldn't survive 5 psi in our climate.  I great way to get a P5 into forced induction is starting with an MSP kit.  There are always people selling complete MSP setups on the US board www.msprotege.com.  I always browse the for sale forums and usually see 3-4 separate MSP setups being sold.  It's all bolt on, and stock boost is 6psi, should put you around 160 at the wheels.  Supporting mods are obviously going to change that (exhaust, boost controller, intercooler, fuel management, etc).

We got a meet this Sunday at SFU at 2pm, come by if you wanna see a few boosted Protege/Protege 5s.  Off the top of my head, probably have 3 aftermarket kits and an MSP at the meet.

sorry i didn't get back to u guys earlier or i would have been at the meet.. i'll check out those two sites yeah it's a manual 5 speed so far everything is stock but i also work on cars as a mechanic and i have seen ALOT of people that just want a turbo, without putting in supporting mods or even changing there gaskets to handle the pressure and *BOOM* i understand u get what u pay for hence the reason i was asking cause to me it sounded a little fishy and again no name stuff... makes ya wonder..

thanks for all the info i'll deffinately have to come to the next meet... wouldn't mind checking out some nice rides..

I have a friend who is using a knock off SSQV, which turns out to have a longer life span than the original HKS unit.

Typical eBay turbo kits involve a lot of custom work. For instance, it doesn't look like that intercooler in the kit would work, due to the piping that comes with the kit. It probably involves some cutting and whatnot. Also, the MAF based protege will require a MAF adapter before the turbo, a part that is not included in the kit.

Also, notice that no manifold is included in the kit. Frankly speaking, this kit is more of a universal kit than a specific Protege kit.

It does seem like a universal kit.  I bet you there's a 99% chance you would have to get a manifold custom fabricated to fit.  The picture I'm sure is a universal shot of what is included, I would think the piping is bent to fit the Protege, but who's to say this kit has been altered or adjusted to better fit the car based on customer feedback?  The HiBoost and MAM kits were designed and tested quite a bit, and continued to change based on problems that came up, as well as other improvements that made for easier installs, more efficiency, etc.  I would honestly stick to a kit and/or parts that are known to fit 100% and have been proven.

Our motors are very fragile, so supporting mods are definately recommended.  Based on horror stories and guinea pigs, our motor can safely handle 8-10psi, based on the quality of the tune, without putting additional money into the fuel system and motor.  Anything more, and you would want to look into forged internals, injectors, fuel pump, and EMS at the least.

yeah our motor sounds alot like a honda motor... no more than 10psi or things start going up in smoke.... yeah like i said i was just browsing online and saw it and wanted your guys oppinion cause u no if u talk to the guy selling it he'll say oh no perfect fit ETC ETC... so yeah.... me getting a turbo won't be for at least a few more months then we'll see and it will be the right one, don't wanna take any chances that's for sure...
