Mazda Owns Me

it seems kinda like the turbo setup that one would buy and bolt on as an aftermarket piece as opposed to a factory setup...

...power is nothing really to write home about...

Fun to drive car.  For when it came out, they could have done a better job on the turbo though.  It came out before the power wars really started.  The SRT-4 was the answer to the MSP.  The MS3 was the answer to the SRT-4.  The MSp never really followed anything.  Not the best setup under the hood, motor is the same as what went into the regular Protege and Protege 5, no changes done internally.

I test drove one before the Mazda3. Good midrange, disappointing high end. Its 170hp got nothing on the Mazda3 2.3L manual. It's got mediocre brakes, but excellent chassis.

I raced on up Gaglardi. It kept up with my stock 2.3L manual, but did not gain any length on me.

Ya the power in an MSP falls off at about 5500.

Interesting!  It's funny how you see the spec vs. spec and think that it should be able to take one a 2.3L 3.

So even with all the things Mazda did to "modify" this Protege, would anyone ever think that it's better than the 3?

"better" is a subjective thing,IMO.  The Protege feels much lighter and tossable.  The 3 has a much more "grown up" feel - heavier, quieter, smoother, etc.  Really depends on what one is looking for in a car

But mazda didn't really do alot of mods to the MSP.  They slapped a turbo on, a small intercooler, different springs and struts, some mediocre sway cars, and pretty much called it a day.  I do really like the body kit they fit on the MSP, it was perfect for the car.  With a bit of money, you can really get an MSP going.

They also did a few other changes for rigidity/longevity concerns, rather than performance.

Strut bar, sway bars (that aren't even that much better than the regular ones that come on the basic sedans), and the strut/spring setup.  I think the axles in the MSP are different too.  Not much else is really different.  Oh, and they have the LSD too, that has had durability problems.  I don't even think Mazda sells replacement LSDs anymore for the MSP, just the regular open diff.  Having the LSD welded has proved to be a pretty good solution.

Funny how you mention that since most people I've asked find all the colors for the MSP a little too "out there" save for the gray.

If you ask me, every color the MSP came in was perfect for it.  Only color I would have added is Crystal Pearl White.  If I had to swap a color for that, would have been the silver.  The color palette for the MSP fit the car so well.  It was the start of the orange car thing too.  Started to see alot of production cars come in orange after that.

Funny you mentioned pearl white. I saw a pearl white turbo MSP two years ago for sale at a used car lot on Marine Drive. It had a carbon fiber hood and was repainted white during the $12,000 accident claim. The paint was sprayed over top of the original yellow paint and there was obvious bondo work. Some kid came all the way from Victoria with his family to look at the car, and paid the full blue book price for it.

Ya there was a guy in Coquitlam with a yellow MSP that he had painted white.  Not sure if that's the one, but probably.  Never seen any others around like it.
