I think Mazda has made more than two different turboed engines. For example, the Mazdaspeed Miata had a 1.8L turbo and the Mazdaspeed Protege had a 2.0L turbo.

The 12A & 13B rotaries; the 323 4WD; the Millenia S had a blower.

Considering Mazda Wankels have had oil seal problems since before I was born I'm surprised it took this long to come up with an extended warranty.

Mazda has also been more willing to experiment (Wankels, Miller cycle) with engines so I would have thought that they would have be more open to feedback from their customers regarding engine life, issues, etc.

The internet has forced the industry to become more competitive. In the 90's there were no forums for car owners to chat and share their experience. It was relatively easy for manufacturers to get away with denying reasonable warranty claims. Now it's difficult to do that because the internet allows people to gather statistics.

In the 90's people who buy the RX-7s could not do a research on the car. They base their research on Consumer Guides and Car & Drivers. But those reviews are far from conclusive. The information technology has changed the playing field for car makers. Opinions of discontent RX-8 owners travel fast on the internet.

I believe I read that the owners who have paid for a fix will be reimbursed for out of warranty repairs.

Not sure about the extended warranty owners though.

did they not have an extended warranty for the RX7.  This may be way back as I don't recall which generation(s) it applied to...

I'm not the original owner. The warranty had already expired when I purchased the car.
