I like the idea of it, but it seems like you're going to have to wait to get through the gates...
I like that you can just run and get on the sky train, not have to scramble through gates. It sucked in Toronto when I was there on vacation.
Another thing to mention, is the fact that if you do get caught, they don't verify your information. You can just say " I don't have any ID on me"

You won't get stuck in the gates.
These things work so well in such densely populated cities like Hong Kong, it will work for us.

i love the octopus card system in HK, it's convenient because you dun need to physically take the card out of the wallet, a lot of times the system can sense the card if you put it at the side of the bag and you can side right through the gates. It reduces your chances of forgetting your card while paying for some random thing because it rarely leaves your wallet or your hands, much like the new paypass thing with mastercard. You beep and go...

it actually speeds up the buying process as you dont need to stand there looking at your wallet for change just take your wallet out (the card doesnt even have to be out) and beep you are done

it's about time. They should eventually implement the system into the busses too. It'll speed up student loading at UBC/SFU.
and nay on the collecting personal information part, not much of a need to. I used the 'Oyster Card' in London and it was hassle free for me. Stayed there for 4 days and returned the card for my deposit+remaining balance at the end of my trip. So it's quite easy for tourists.

if this was combined with the u pass its gonna be even harder to track whos a legit u pass holder and whos not, since u dont even need to take it out
but then again i dont think they really give a shit as long as someones paying for it (since they can deactivate the old "smart u pass" when you say you lost yours and get a new one, whereas now you just say u lost your u pass and they will issue one which is the same as everybody elses but with ur picture)
all in all i think the advantages are far greater than the draw backs i dont really care if the govt tracks what i buy or where i go cause i have nothing to hide anyways and if you do have something to hide, theres always that option of buying one time fares everytime or just using cash to pay instead of using this card
the smart card is just ANOTHER OPTION, not a neccessity(sp?)

i am really looking for this and see it expend from only for the translink. it's very convenient to have such a card in HK, but then your spending would go up cuz it's like online shopping, you will easily overspend, cuz you are not as aware when it is not real money when you are doing the transaction

It's sure a good idea. Should have done it long ago. However, I'm not quite familiar with the transit system but I know some people can just go ride a skytrain without paying as there are no gates whatsoever. So its certainly a good idea but not sure how this will work out in a city like Vancouver. Cause we all know that its extremely effective in HK. Hope it works out!
