well as some of you have told me, my sigma is extremely soft.. i'm wanting to send it back to sigma usa to fix, but i need to cover shipping to and from, which won't be cheap after all is said and done. so at the recommendation of pekpek, i did the focus test. these are 100% crops help me decide whether or not i need to send this sucker in.. thanks warning, not 56k friendly. first pic 20mm at f5.6 (the instructions were to put it on the lowest f stop.. but that was it, so i chose to try 10mm and 20mm shots) at 10mm f5.6 straight line at 20mm f5.6 straight line at 10mm f5.6

Big time.
Try with your other lenses though. It could be the AF that is off as well.
I was going to test this on my lenses yesterday as well, but didn't have time.

Yeah, front focusing, most noticeable at 20mm.

Front focusing affects softness? I'm gonna take a bunch of shots next week in Banff with the Sigma and see if it's too soft to my expectations. If so, then I'll try this test as well. If you're sending it back Dan, lemme know how it goes and the experience You can be the guinea pig. dL

Now that I observed your test more, your camera seems to be tilted. I'm not sure if that would affect the test. Also, how are you certain you placed your camera at an angle of 45 degrees? Wouldn't those factors affect the test results?

I am assuming these shots were taken on a tripod? Otherwise any movement will throw the focus off a little bit.

ya they were on a tripod.. SHOULD be 45 degrees, of course this is measured with the naked eye, so there is a possibility that it wasn't exactly 45degrees..

ya i'm planning on sending it back.. in fact, instead of gentec (heard they were useless), i'm sending it to sigma usa.. they said i would need to cover shipping to and from, which is ok if they can fix it correctly the first time around.

Yea Canadian warranties are done thru 3rd party distributors. That applies to Tamron as well.

ya and since i heard multiple stories of gentec not being able to pinpoint the problem, it may end up with me sending it back to them a few times.. so if i'm going to do it, i rather it is done right the first time.
quick question derek, for your 10-20, does the warranty card have the extra part where it says 'dealer' or whatever? i'm thinking sigma4less didn't fill out the warranty card..

That's true. AFAIK, most important proof is your receipt.

Hey Dan, I have the sigma 10-20 as well. I think mine has focus issues as well, but I don't have a focus card to test against. I don't think this will make much of a difference, but i read that f/8.0 is the sweet spot for that lens. But if it's front focusing on 5.6, then there's a problem no matter what.
I bought mine at Broadway Camera and they took part of the warranty card, but didn't fill out any info on mine.

I think that's only necessary if you're buying it at a store. So that you can return to the store and they know you bought it from them and when. So no fake receipts or anything. Then they'll deal w/the manufacturer on your behalf if they offer any level of customer service.
