So I've wanted to do this for a very long time, but it's hard to get this done without the proper planning, tools, and equipment.
I've done some poking around here and there but nothing ever serious. Seems like we can get this going as a group. Leighton's post over on Kev's car pix thread is promising. Could we perhaps merge what we've all come up with and come up with a rig?
Unfortunately, people aren't very willing to share pictures of their rigs, or information about how they built their's up. Many commercial rigs are only rented out and are extremely expensive.
Here's what I've come up with so far:
-two types of mounts: magnets (to the undercarriage of the car), or suction cups (to the body of the car) -with the suction cups or even the magnets, there's probably not too much distance that you can get away from the car itself (perhaps no more than 3 or 4 feet) -generous usage of clamps, bolts, plates, etc. -lots of drilling! And powertools!
If there's anyone good with autocad or any drafting programs, this would be a good place to start I think.

It might be easier to have one that mounts the camera upside down though, cuz wont the threads on the mount make it compatible with more cameras and bring down the cost a bit
I was just looking at my manfrotto tripod and if we have part of the rig secure into eachothers head, then wouldnt that be easier?

Looks neat. I always thought those shots were taken by squatting down or laying on the ground. LOL!! I've got a bunch of hardware and a reasonably priced source for aluminum if you guys need.

The suction cups for handling automotive glass are pretty strong. I've picked up a 100lb sheet of steel using 2 of them. If StevieSpeed3 can score some with his friend's staff discount that would be the cheapest. If not I get a pretty good discount at Lordco, plus KMS Tools and Princess Auto both carry them as well. I'll probably be heading to one of those places this weekend so I'll see if I can pick up a few suction cups, preferably with metal casing. Are the shots taken with the cars stationary most of the time?
