I was wondering if anyone has any luck with pop-up flash diffusers. I'm not at the point of purchasing an external flash, but would like to cut down the harsh light on my xs.

I've been searching around and there seems to be a few options.

These little place cards, They're super cheap, but they don't look like they'd do much more than scotch tape.

There are these 'puffer' versions that look to be of higher build quality, but... the prices they want for them seem to be a little high.

There are some DIY options, the film canister and the full on screen. I'm playing the film canister option right now, and it hardly seems to make a difference. It's just too small. I'll try and setup some test shots in a bit.

Anyone else have experiences? Ideas?

Cheers

The larger ones will work better by giving the illusion of a larger light source which will help soften light greatly.

if you want something cheap....get a piece of white paper and cut it out to a shape you want.  Tape it onto the camera and you're done.  I did that for a little while and it worked fine.  You should invest on an external flash though, it makes a huge difference...even a low powered one will do fine.

The other thing you can do is adjust the power of the flash in the camera settings.  It will help tone it down a little bit.
