Hey All, I’m looking at trading in my Mazda 3 this spring/summer. I’m looking at getting a CUV. I need something with alittle more cargo space as well as the ability to go on rough dirt roads, and to handle the snow. I am leaning towards the Mitsubishi Outlander XLS with the V6. Anybody here have one or know anybody that has one? Are they good for reliability? I’ve looked at the RAV4 and I love it, except for the swing gate. The Honda CRV is underpowered for me. Not too sure about Nissan. I don’t really want to spend more than $40K before taxes.
Thanks a lot! G

You want a CUV that takes Regular or Premium? Does that matter? Prefer a V6 or a 4?

Oh yea, looking at a CUV that runs regular unleaded. A V6. Sorry, should have posted that.

My friend has an Edge. She finds it huge too park (loves the parking sensors) It gets about the same mileage as my 6. The government has some Outlanders in Ontario. they have had them for a year with no problems (yet). The Dodge Journey is a piece of Crap with an Eighties dash. But I knew some older type folk in Florida that just bought one and they love it, reliable for the last 20,000 kms. (they have the 3.5LV6) The nissan Rogue has a CVT, ugh! nuff said.

My friend has a 2008 Outlander and loves it. No problems what-so-ever. He got way more value then a CRV or a RAV4 (the other 2 he was looking at).
Hope this helps.

I couldn't stand the cheaper interior of the Outlander. Same with the RAV4, I really wanted to get the V6 sport, but at the time, it was 36k, no negotiating and again, cheap interior. The steering wheel really put me off, same cruise control stick that were found in Toyotas from the late 80's. When I was looking for a SUV/CUV, I was pretty impressed with the Ford Edge, nice interior, roomy but it was over $40k, back in 07, I'm sure prices are way better now, maybe go take a look.

I suggest checking out the new Hyundai Santa Fe as well. A really handsome SUV. I'm not sure if it offers more value or anything, but they seem to be selling really well.
If not, I would go RAV4. But don't expect to be able to haggle for it.

i drove a outlander for a bit at work and spent some time in the interior its nicely built the tailgate is very functional, and the bottom half folds down like the BMW x-5's interior build quality is not bad, very sturdy, outside looks are phenomenal (i love the looks of it), but it comes nothing close to luxury found in CUVs like the RDX, its more like a solid build
another car you might want to look at is the toyota venza, its very stylish

Too bad we have to wait a year or so for the outlander to get a new nose like this Outlander GT.

I have the Rav4 V6. It's a great vehicle and I've test driven many suvs before settling for it. I have about 45,000km on it now...a little over 2 years of ownership and so far, it hasn't given me one problem. All I've done on the vehicle are just oil changes and the tire rotations. Oh...also changed the differential fluid. It's high enough off the ground that you don't need to jack it up to get at the drain bolt and oil filter. If you're in the market, I'd suggest looking at a used Rav4. They are cheaper and you can haggle with the price.
I wouldn't spring for the 4 cycliner as it's not that great. I find it lacking in power and it does get loud. Also the fuel economy is very very similiar to the v6 so I didn't see a point in getting a 4 cylinder. The CRV is the same as well with the 4. The V6 is a tad bit overkill but it does propel the rav when you need it. I loaded up the rear of the rav4 with the seats folded down with furniture, appliances, etc and it still had a lot of kick left in it. The load was pretty heavy as I could feel the weight in the back while driving. It uses regular gas but I put in premium...and there is a difference power and responsiveness of the engine. I wasn't a big fan of the swing gate door either but I got used to it. It's not that bad...I don't really find that it's in the way much. Just for parallel parking, it can be a bit of a pain if you are looking to load stuff but you can keep the door open partially. In terms of cargo room...huge! Another vehicle to consider is a used lexus RX300 or RX330. They aren't that badly priced right now depending on the year. The V6 in the rav is used in other vehicles in Toyota/Lexus vehicles: camry, is350, es350.
I wouldn't really consider the rav4 as a CUV...the Venza would be more of a CUV. I see the rav as more of an SUV...but not the off roading kind...though you could take it onto some trails without difficulties. have you looked at the FJ cruiser?
