good choice on the xrs model.  It's a bit hard to find in a 6spd...I'm guessing it's an auto?  Regardless, you'll still be able to harness some of that "lift" power the 1.8L engine offers.  There's not much difference in real world fuel economy for the two engines.  Just depends on your driving habit. I found the 1.8 to be much more responsive than the base engine...makes it more enjoyable to drive.

It is an automatic. Unfortunately my mom doesn't like to driving a manual.
I know exactly what you are talking about. The engine literally makes the car jump and accelerate really fast when moving from a stand still. It definitely needs some getting used to.

All in all the car is great but it doesn't have the luxuriousness of a Mazda3 with leather.
Although the dash with the whole speedometer cluster feel very compareable to a Mazda3.

i felt the same thing with matrix and corollas
from a standstill the car accelerates hella fast, i dont know if its jsut a design difference or something but i never felt that jump on a mazda3 (neither auto nor manual)

Nice choice!

What year is it?

I thought the XRS was only available with the 6 speed manual?

1st year production = 6spd only
2nd year = 4spd auto and 6 spd manual

I think it is a 2006.

I thought the Matrix XRS was produced from 2003 to 2006.  I know the 2005 & 2006 were only available with the 6speed (brother has one) so I guess it must have been the 2003 and/or the 2004 that could also be had with the auto?

the corolla and matrix will go nicely off the line.  The kick comes in at a higher RPM around 6000 or 6200RPM...it feels very close to when a turbo kicks in.  The later years of XRS was toned down somewhat...they just didn't have the kick in the pants as the earlier engines did.  I think toyota did some remapping of the power band.  Some people found it quite obnoxious.  I've driven the early and later years of that XRS engine...not the current 2.5L the corolla and matrix uses (that's a rendition from the camry).  I have noticed the difference in the way the car responds, it's definitely not as spunky as the earlier versions of the engine.  If you drove the corolla XRS 2006 vs the matrix xrs 2000 model, you'll notice a difference.  The corolla xrs just feels dead compared to the matrix's response.

The automatic transmission with the 2ZZ Lift engine is useless from what I heard, the slushbox won't let the engine rev high enough to ever hit Lift. Does the auto have paddle/manual shifters on it at least so you can force the engine into Lift? Buddy of mine in Seattle has a 04 Matrix XRS with AEM intake, PPE header, Borla exhaust, it just sounds beautiful like bwaaaaaaaaaahhhh-BWAAAAAAAHH.

I loved my 08 Corolla CE (though in hindsight I wish I got the 05-06 XRS), but the one thing I hated were the seats (no back/thigh support). The Matrix seats are firmer but a lot more supporitve for long drives. I think the interior of the Matrix is cheap though, it looks cool but it's cheap. The Corolla is bland but it's functional and higher quality.

the auto tranny does allow some use of the 2ZZ capabilities if you manually override it from L --> 2, etc.  Even with the manual, I still found it a little bit lacking as it kept dropping out of the sweet zone.  On the test drives I kept all my shifts near red line to to maintain that power but after upshifting, it drops way below and you'd have to work it up again.

The auto in the matrix does not have paddle shifters to force it into lift.  In the Celica GTS there were "paddle" like shifters that you could use to do that.  I liked the Celica GTS...felt like a little go-kart....though the blind spots were horrible in there.
