Sweet Jebus - I want one!   Shocked

http://www.motorauthority.com/2009-mazda-mx-5-superlight-concept-car-teased-ahead-of-frankfurt-debut.html

Quote
The Mazda MX-5 has become one of the best selling convertibles of all time thanks to its simple, unchanging formula of low weight and fun dynamics - a formula that has served it well for the two decades that it has been in production now.

To celebrate the car's 20th anniversary, however, Mazda is changing up this formula with a special speedster-style concept dubbed the MX-5 Superlight. The concept, which is set to be revealed at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, reveals a strange looking MX-5 with the front windscreen dispensed with and futuristic-looking, streamlined roll bars at the rear.

While Mazda has not revealed too many details on the concept just yet, it is expected that a number of weight-saving measures will be undertaken throughout the entire car. Additionally, interior sketches reveal a racing seat, further hinting at the performance potential of the car. The MX-5 Superlight was designed by Mazda's in-house team in Germany, and other unique cosmetic and structural changes include the lack of A-pillars, as well as the smooth front and rear decks presumably used to help control airflow around the car.

In terms of powertrains, the concept will likely be fitted with the standard MX-5's range-topping 2.0L gasoline engine, and with the weight-saving measures put in place the Superlight will be much quicker than the standard model. Disappointingly, however, the chances of a production variant ever reaching dealerships is extremely slim at best, and the MX-5 Superlight will most likely remain a commemorative flight-of-fancy for the 20th birthday of the MX-5.

A cool idea, but disappointing to read it's not a concept intended for production. Oh well.

I don't think many places would allow a road-legal car without a windscreen.

There are quite a few race prepped Miatas with the front windscreen removed though.

I wonder how they would be lightening the car? Carbon fiber?

The Ariel Atom is road legal in Canada.  No windscreen - or body panels either!

The AA is probably classified as a kit car so it doesn't have to face the rules and regulations that a production car would have to face.

I love the way the current gen miata with the hardtop looks.  I see a silver PRHT almost everyday on the way to work and I would serious consider buying one if they had one with some more power, like with the speed3 engine or whatever.  Sure, these cars are all about handling, but it would be nice to get one with more power, at least with enough juice to pass the old ladies in their 3.5L >250HP mini vans.
