Cold temps are here... looks like below 7 degrees from now until... oh, April or so.

My car smells like gas when the a/c is turned on. Heating up the car this morning made me cold as I had to do it with all the windows rolled down.

Bah!

You stay here long enough and you'll join in the discussion. Smiley

I used to be very resilient coming from the east as well but the mostly mild and enjoyable weather has softened me up over the years!

Sometimes I'd rather be in Edmonton's dry -20 than Vancouver's moist -5 which can feel like -20 if that moisture gets under your clothes and onto your skin.

It's still pretty warm compared to last year at this time. In fact, I saw some[old] guy this morning around 8AM jogging without his shirt on.  Nonetheless, I wish my employer would've allowed me to take this week off and take that trip to an all inclusive in warm Cancun for under $400 Sad

Roads are fine in the AM and stay that way all day and night, with the exception of congestion.  The salt trucks usually do a decent job on the main arteries. I guess it depends on where you're driving.

I know that it is a controversial subject, but I am all for mandating that people put winter tires on their vehicle past a certain date as Quebec does.  Every year we have needless fatalities that are caused (or at least greatly contributed to) driving with improper tires in winter driving conditions.  Perhaps, as this story suggests, it could be only apply to certain areas of the province but I still think it a necessary evil.

Brad

Not crazy...just makes sense!  The difference between and all season and dedicated winters is night and day!  My winter tires have never failed me.  Though there are people who seem to think that since they have winter tires they can still boot around like a maniac.  My suv was fine with the snow dumps last year...the tires were crap but I can manage my way in those conditions quite well.  4wd and traction control...bleh...overrated for city streets really.  They work well if you need to get out of a sticky situation or if you're on the highway but it always boils down to the driver.

I see A LOT of people who come in during winter from accidents.  Many could have been prevented by actually learning how to drive and others could have been prevented had they have proper tires!  Considering the injuries I've seen and treated, I'm all in support of having the tires mandatory.  I drive up to the mountains quite a bit in the winter for skiing and I would never consider driving up there without proper tires...it'd just be stupid.

A grand for tires and rims is cheap considering the costs of being injured and off work due to an accident.

Requoting this because this just happened the other day and we saw the result in our hospital... 86 year old man (who should not have been driving with his medical history anyways) travelling uphill in slushy conditions on "worn all-season tires" (from RCMP news release) crosses centre line and takes out a family in a mini van.  Dad, broken leg, mom fractured ribs, grandmother fatality (unbelted), and two children with minor injuries.  The other driver is in hospital with multiple contusions and other related or unrelated medical conditions.  I have driven in winter conditions for almost 30 years and I always say you are only as good as the person coming towards you....

I am pleasantly surprised how many members wear winters and, to me, it should be mandated.
