I am pleasantly surprised how many members wear winters and, to me, it should be mandated.

I noticed that I see more Mazdas per capita than any other car manufacturer (modern cars) rockin' steelies with winter tires. Maybe it just goes with the general observation that Mazda owners drive Mazdas because they want the best driving experience, or maybe I just tend to pay more attention to Mazdas. lol.

I did see a few surprise cars with steelies and winters, a Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and Hyundai Tuscon. Good to know that some people know that AWD alone isn't good enough for snow.

Dkaz, I think you just notice it more.  Also, just because people don't mount steelies doesn't mean that they're not using winter tires!

jurgenk -- I think seeing more winter tire stuff would be expected on a forum like this one.  Generally people on fora tend to care a bit more about their cars -- for better or for worse -- and are less likely to think "omgwtfcan'tIgetuphillinsnowinmyultimatedrivingmachinebmwwhenI'mhammeringthegas?!?!!"

In general, I'm noticing more cars/vans having winter tires this year.  I think that's a good thing. However, for some reason it bothers me to see FWD cars have only winters on the fronts.

I think our Mazda3s look pretty good with black steelies. Maybe cuz I always liked the rally car look. Smiley

BTW, we had the winter tires mounted and balanced at Wal-Mart today and the tech said that the steelies we got from Volco had a bit of play.  However, the lug-nuts are tapered (once tightened they should be ok) and since the steelies are hubcentric with the right offset and centre bore, there is adequate caliper clearance, the wheels  "should" be fine.  I never thought the lug nut hole would be an issue. And the guy at the counter hinted that it would be a bit cheaper in the long run if we used our OEM alloy wheels instead of buying separate steelies.  Hmm.

^^you will at one point or another get some rim damage from the mount and dismount of tires.  I'd stick with the steelies and keep your OEM's for the summer/spring/fall.  You'll also save yourself some corrosion headaches as well as rim damages in the winter due to ice, pot holes etc.  Put that together and it's one hell of a repair bill.

i do agree the mazdas looks awsome with steel rims lol ...  and regarding your lug nuts ,,, if the play u get from the stelles comes from the size of the holes being bigger then the studs i dont think a tapered lug nut will get rid of the play itll just hold it in place. pretty sure
