i might be heading there in early january (1st or 2nd week)
given the conditions over there
if i have a lowered 3 with a full set of snow tires that are RELAITEVLY new (70%+ tread) (no chains) (dunlop wintersport m3 in 225/55/16)
would i be able to make it from vancouver relatively safely? (#1 hwy, coquihala, then w/e route to sunpeaks)
would the snow be too deep for me to make it?
how damaging for the car do you think it is for a road trip like this in the winter?

few years ago my frds drove there on a SUV (acura rdx) with all seasons
that said, they made it up there, but they said it was very unsafe and bad for the car
but they were going stupidly fast (they told me they were going 140-160 on coquihala and #1, on snow)

Should be ok.  I am in kamloops, last winter I went up the sun peaks early in the season with lots of snow and made it there ok on my winters.  Unfortunately it warmed up a bit that day and drove back in freezing rain Sad Also drove from Kamloops to Edmonton for Christmas and hit some pretty fressh snow in the higher parts.  Just took my time and went slow and no issues on either trip.

Just to add me car is lowered too. and on stiff shocks.

Ya it's plowed.

It's a popular place so they should keep it easy to access.

When I went up there it did snow a little the night before so the roads had snow on them but nothing to be concerned about.

The worst part about driving the coke is the rocks that fly from passing vehicles or from vehicles that you are passing. This problem is worse when little or no snow is on the roads. I've driven Kelowna to Van every week for the last two months and the Mazda is good in the snow but is had to beat a 4x4 suburban with good ice / snow tires.

With Mazda's thin paint, expect some major chips from driving to the interior. I would strongly consider putting on a bra and mud flaps for that trip. Otherwise, snow tires are all you need.

There is a bra available for the Speed, but it sucks.  The lower piece needs these snap like screws installed in the fender wells for the bra to attach to.  Problem is the clips the screws go into are made out of harder metal than the screws.  So you end up trashing the threads of the screws.

I use the upper piece that goes over the hood on winter road trips.  I should have used it on summer road trips too, my hood is thrashed.

Anyone ever tried saran wrap as a temporary protective covering on a car front?  We used to use it on helmet face shields with a tab of tape for tear offs.  Then they came up with the precut multi layers packages.

Tape over the front is probably not a bad idea for road trips. Remove it when you get there if you're there long and re-apply. I wonder how well that tape does in the summer sun.

No need to be worried if you have snow tires. I've made the trip in a fwd sedan without snow tires and made it (though it was interesting coming back down that night when it got icy!) and a truck left in rwd. It's not a bad road at all. Quite a curvy road when you're getting closer but just go slow and you'll be just fine.
I wouldn't load down the rear of the car with more than you need being a fwd car, you'd just take weight off your driving/steering wheels (ie. your equipment, a small shovel, some salt or ice melter and a roadside emergency kit just because it's so dark up there and you never know).
