As much as I loved having my fronts tinted, it just gives the police an excuse to pull you over.  Are tinted windows really worth the hassle?

I get migraines and I must say ... it really does help. Smiley

Just remember, there are loop holes to everything, you just need to know how and where to look for them Cheesy

Yes, it is possible to drive with front tint legally if prescribed by a medical or eye doctor.

I read somewhere that BC is not one of the places that will allow it even with medical excuse? But... that several other places will....

I get serious migraines.. and am super light sensitive.. due to a head injury from my previous accident... and even have a skin condition for which I have to apply medication that I am not supposed to be exposed to sun-light for extended periods of time while it's on... (And it has to be on all day).   My eyes water like crazy anytime I Drive anywhere... (not just on a sunny day) but if its a clear sky at all.. the light coming from it is enough to trigger it. I end up havin to pull over sometimes when it gets bad.

so I'd DEFINATELY love to find a loop hole that is valid. And if the medical works. I guess I need to set me up an appointment.

That said, I think a lot of the cars I see out there have driver/passenger tint especially out here in Surrey. Many look like limo tint.

Still pretty sure that front tint is illegal, doctor's note or not.  Sunglasses work just as well as tinted windows, better even.

front tint is illegal, period.
Whether you receive a ticket or not is based on the Officer who pulled you over.  By you providing a doctor's note only LESSENS the chance of you receiving a ticket, they can still ticket you if they wish to.  It is not a loophole, but rather a possibility for you to get off the hook.

So, essentially if you run into an asshole of a cop, you're done.  Run into a nice cop then you will probably be let off.

I'm sensitive to really bright light too, but wearing sunglasses is enough for me. Wish I could get some really nice glasses though, I'm sure it would be even better.

I see a lot of cars with front tints in Surrey area. Not sure how people get away with it.

I'm a vehicle inspector, class 12345 (all) and my father in law is RCMP.

I know there's loop holes, I didn't say the doctors note is the loop hole. Yes, however, it is illegal.

I've went to shops and had my car with shaved handles, etc, passed. (I'm Commercial, and wasn't working in a Automotive designated shop at the time.) <theres loop holes to everything>

FYI: For a migraine, sunglasses are not enough. And when one hits and you're at work or out and have to get home, side tint does help ... immensely. I keep some of my welding safety glasses (green/black) in my glove box, my last vehicles didn't have tint. The glasses helped but still not as much as those + the welding glasses. You know its bad when you have to wear those to get home ... at night too  Sad  For those of us that get REAL migraines ... we understand.

If you're worried about it don't get limo tint, roll your windows down beside a cop or when pulled over, don't drive or act like an ass Smiley

if you do have a medical reason for having it, make sure you have your doctor's note or something official stating so with a signature and contact name.  It's still not legal but it does help the situation a bit.  If the officer doesn't believe it, don't argue with him/her, they're just doing their job.  Take the ticket and dispute it in court.  Most times, they are understanding if you talk to them in a polite manner...like any other person you deal with.  If you do have front windows tinted, be smart about it as stated.  Having a limo tint is going to get you pulled over for sure.  Having a tint that matches the rear in a gradual darkening manner will be less attention grabbing.  60 front and 35 rears are a good combo...it's what I had on my 3 when I had it.  Seems like the cars that are factory tinted are about that or a bit less tinted depending on manufacturer.

You'll have to understand from the officer's point of view as well.  If they can't see you, they don't know what you are doing (planning on doing) or what you have inside the car (when pulled over), not to mention the hazard of not being able to see properly if the tint is too dark.  It's an occupational hazard I know my friends face when they pull someone over.

If you do dispute, just make sure you don't get this JP:
ICBC has not issued medical tint variance exemptions for at least 10 years. They reasoned that dangers of the tint still exist to the driver and other road users. I had one driver try to use the medical excuse for a tint ticket and 2 fail to comply charges. He told the JP that he was so sensitive that he was on medication and named it. After the JP found him guilty of all 3 charges, she pointed out that she had the same medical condition and when it got so bad that she was on the medication, she was not capable of driving safely. She ripped him for purjury and told him to wear long sleeves, a hat, glove and sunglasses...if he really had the condition and it was that bad. A Doctor's letter is just that...a letter from a Doctor. It's is not a legal exemption to allow someone to break the law. As a side note, ICBC also stopped issuing medical seatbelt exemptions finally. The said that science has shown that there is no benifit to NOT wearing the belt and a huge danger if they are not buckled in. Now if they would only drop the cabbie's exemption.

I get migraines but I stay home when it happens. I do get headaches when it's too bright outside but this all sounds like a big hassle to carry a doctor's note at all times for window tint. That's why I didn't do it.

I think it just sucks on the tint laws.. I think it's all a bullshit regulation.
There is no safely problems other than cops feeling nervous when pulling someone over.

While I like tint, I think this reason is more than sufficient to make it illegal

Are you serious?
I mean sure ban dark tint. Set a limit to 30% I'd be cool with that.
There is just too much of a UV protection benefit, cars with tint are cooler inside during the summer, so that's less gas wasted because of people cranking up the AC.
Let's be honest, a cops job is dangerous, but banning tint is the same flawed logic as banning all opaque apartment doors because it could be used to shoot a cop when he comes to the door.

I just meant that it must have some time limit on a doctor's note. I think a cop would not take it seriously if the note wasn't updated say on an annual basis. If it was too old, he might not care. But who knows, maybe it would be good enough forever.
