My uncle received a ticket from the City of Vancouver recently. The violation is: place leave abandon or cause to be left placed or abandoned a derelict motor vehicle on a street.
The story is he parked one of his cars in front of his house (on the street) for about 3 months. The car is not insured but he did drive it around the block once a month to run the engine for a bit. There are license plates on the car.
The ticket is $250 and he wants to know can it be disputed since it is parked in front of his house and not blocking anyone?

An uninsured car cannot be left on public property. The streetfront of your one's is public property, so he could certainly dispute but he'd be pretty clearly in the wrong (ie, a dispute would be a waste of our tax dollars).

My understanding is the same as that of HT. An uninsured car needs to be on your lot (not in front of the house).

He can look up the violation number on their website too.
From what I know of out here, you can't leave any uninsured vehicles on public property. And, you're only allowed a certain number of uninsured vehicles. (usually)

wait, is it uninsured or he has garage insurance? cause parking an uninsured vehicle on the street is probably not the best move. what if someone hits the car and totalled it?

There is storage insurance but even then it has to be on private property.

It has no insurance all. I guess he has to pay for the ticket. Thanks for the info!

he is lucky to only get a ticket. Most will get towed PLUS a ticket. The plate on the car is expired thus equals to no plate. Just it is harder to spot unless paying attention. Vancouver has a known street parking problem. However it is a big city, so most likely a neighbor called it in (unless it is a busy area near skytrain, etc)

He suspects it is the neighbour too as they have quite a few cars as well and they don't have enough parking spaces in the front.

Probably is. I remember my dad getting one of these tickets way back in the 80's when we lived in Vancouver. He never got towed but I'm sure it was a neighbor who called on him as well.

Storage insurance is only $60 a year (on an older vehicle) with I think $300 comprehensive deductible. I would get it and in fact most landlords will require this so say if your car catches on fire and causes the building to burn, everyone is covered. It's cheap peace of mind.
If he doesn't have private property to store the car on, a lot of storage places around the Lower Mainland offer vehicle storage, but then at that rate it might be cheaper to tack on basic insurance + comprehensive depending on his discount.

ic this reminds me of my neighbour lol, he "had" this piece of shit car sitting for years and years in the alley, just rusting and breaking down never moved it or anything , i drove down my alley the other day and almost had a heartattack when i noticed the rust bucket was gone and there was just a empty dirty space and the way he had it parked , they would of have to drag it out sideways . but im glad its gone big eye sore

My buddy had a Chevette with a blown motor on the street for about 6 months with no insurance. He had like a dozen tickets before they finally towed it. He didn't really care hahaha.

I guess he will just leave it in his rear driveway. He wants to move the car so there is more room at the back.

That is why we have problem on street parking. Everyone wants more room for themselves and park their cars on the street.
