Lens recommendation

So I picked up a Rebel XSi over a month ago for 488 +tax due to a miss printed ad .

Anyways, love and but am limited by the 18-55 lens that came with it.  Looking to get a new lens lens to take me up to the 200 range.  I prefered if it at least start at the 55 as i would rather not have a gap between the 18-55 and the new lens.

What do you recommend???

Just going to add into this a bit.  This is my first SLR and still getting use to it. So I obviously to next an amazing lens.  Just something that as my brother in law calls it a "being touristy" lens.

Some places I would be using it is at AutoX taking pics of moving cars, Dog parks and while out "exploring" (Here in kamloops there is lots of valley's and hills that my gf and I like to hike through).

If you've had your camera for only a month and your first DSLR, I wouldn't spend any more money on it. Use your kit lens and discover what you want to improve. Otherwise you'll be getting advice that won't apply to what you shoot.

But... the one lens I usually recommend to everybody is a 50mm f1.8. Always useful, cheap and "fast". It really shows you the advantage of "fast" lenses and the power of depth of field and bokeh.

I agree here.  My first DSLR many years back was a Rebel XT and bought of eBay.  Asking for which lens is best really depends on the kind of shooting you will do most of the time.  Budget is also an issue. 

But if you're just talking about zoom lenses I agree that the 50-250mm is a decent lens.  I own one myself for times I need a bit of zoom but I like close shots and big apertures which is why I recently invested in a Canon 17-55 f2.8.  So really it boils down to what kind of shots you are looking for and the quality of those shots.

I know I an still new to it and I am not getting a lens quite yet. Just looking for now and would like something with more zooming capabilities.

I am finding myself getting limited when trying to take pics of my dog at the off leash parks. Just one example.

Canon 24-105 F4 with the 1.6 cropped sensor of your camera = a perfect walkaround lens + ability to keep it if you upgrade to a full frame camera.
