Police say that speed and alcohol are both contributing factors in the crash. None of the victims were wearing seatbelts -- a fourth man in the BMW had his fashioned and survived the collision.

What's wrong with that? You're supposed to fashion your seatbelts!

BMW 5 series, 7 series, Cobalt, Matrix, MS3, regular 3, etc. doesn't matter what car they were in as all of them can do more than 180km/h which would have killed them.  There's little difference between 180km/h and 290km/h when you hit a stationary object.

Limiting young people to driving GEO Metro's isn't the solution.... the solution is better driver training which includes how a car handles at high speeds.  Too bad we view driving as a right here in North America rather then a privilege.

Actually a 2 ton car travelling at 180 Km/h hits with a force of about 100,000 newtons.  That same car at 290 hits with a force of 161,120 newtons.  That's more than 1.5x the force. Grin

Nevermind, my math is screwed up.  Been a long time since high school physics.

That said, you're still pretty much fu*ked if you hit a stationary object at highway+ speeds.

What about the E = 1/2 m * v^2 equation where E = energy in J, m = mass in kg, v = velocity in m/s?

They should just have speed limiters for Canada set at 130...I have never seen any speed limit above 130, why the hell do they set them at 250km/h when you have to absolutely stupid to actually go that fast.

By that logic, all cars should be equipped with GPS transmitters that limit the cars maximum speed to whatever the limit is on the road they're driving on.

We don't need the government to protect us from ourselves.  People just need to suck it up and stop being idiots.

Speed limiters? Should there also be automatic seat belts? How about automatic braking/collision avoidance systems?

They don't limit speeds that low so that the police can potentially ticket you and get your money Grin

Didn't a older version Honda (accord?) have these...gawd those were retarded. And if the motor breaks, bye bye safety.

When I'm passing a B-train semi I wouldn't want to be limited to a 130 max.  I want to be in the oncoming lane for as brief a time as possible.  JMO

Swedish man gets $1mn speeding ticket
The driver had previously escaped being clocked by numerous speed cameras on his journey simply because he was going too fast and the instruments were incapable of clocking any speed beyond 200 km/h.

The camera that caught him driving at close to 300 km/h was a new generation of radar machines that was recently installed.

Speeding fines in Switzerland are based on the driver's income... so the odds are good he had plenty of $$$.  The least he could have done was come up with a better excuse than blaming the speedo on his new SLS.
