Quote
Safety organizations and the District of West Vancouver, Canada are joining forces to build awareness about careful driving during the start of the school year. Thanks the work of the BCAA Traffic Safety Association, drivers motoring down 22nd Street in West Vancouver will be met with a 3D image of a girl chasing a ball across the street. No one is saying exactly how the tech works, but it's meant to be a wakeup call for drivers who may be distracted or otherwise not paying enough attention to their surroundings while driving near school zones.

The display will be installed for just one week and cost a princely total of $14,400 (USD) to operate. According to The Globe and Mail, drivers will be able to see that there is something on the road as they approach the 3D image. Once the vehicle reaches a certain point, the image of the child and her toy will appear. According to the BCAA Traffic Safety Association, September and October are the two months with the highest child fatalities, and this exercise should go well beyond the typical awareness campaign. Here's hoping it doesn't trigger any panic-braking induced accidents in the process.

Well that is West Vancouver for ya.....they got money to burn.

But two things I see:

1. regular driver panic and hit the brake causing rear-end accident(s)
2. driver(s) ignore the display but ended up being a real girl running out.....girl get mowed down.

Lol! I was thinking the same. I'd shit my pants if I had to avoid something I didn't have to avoid... What a waste of money/

Hell, give me $15,000 and I'll dress like a school girl and play with my balls in the middle of the street.

I think this will actually cause an accident instead of increasing awareness...

Do more road tests - THAT will get rid of your bad drivers..But nooo, they just have to be so damn retarded to use something as simple as that. Lets spend 15k instead for a week long project that wont change anything in the end - your bad drivers are still on the roads.

Everyone has been saying that but no one wants to take them again. Every 5 years a test would help. Imagine all the extra money they would make charging people on top of the $75 renewal fee. You would think they would have thought of this already!

charge a $100 fee for renewal and include a test Cheesy. Cheaper to pay someone $20/hour (and make $25/hour if the tests are an hour) than have to pay out all these claims Cheesy). I saw a real good one today - driver behind me almost swerved into the median 2 times when there was nothing to avoid, then he passes me going about 150 in a 90 zone weaving through traffic and almost going into the ditch and almost rear-ended someone.

I wouldn't mind taking the test every time we renew our license.  that will help to keep the poor drivers off the road.

But then..maybe they want bad drivers so they can up their premiums, so ICBC gets a better profit margin.
And the attempts at increasing awareness - just a distraction Roll Eyes

So they paid someone $15,000 to paint some 3D art on a road... and by pay i mean give the arist 1,000 and another 1,000 to keep his mouth shut, and then keep the 13,000 for West Vancouver's Mayor as spending money for his (sarcastic) brilliant idea .
