Mazda has big plans for the future of its rotary engine. According to GoAuto, the company is currently hard at work on improving the powerplant's fuel economy by a full 50 percent.

I have built a couple Wankel rotary engines and taken apart lots more. One thing with the Wankel is that if you increase the compression ratio, you are getting rid of volume of air you can put in the engine. To me, less air is less power. When you take air into a Wankel, the depression in the rotor is not a quench zone, it is a volume area. The way the rotor moves and the design of the housing controls the compression.

Now, if you had a turbo that made your compression increase, that might be the best way. In a race application, the wankel was quite thirsty. You would go through 6 gallons of gas in a half hour race.
