I guess just like key, once you started it....the key just sits there. If there is a way to pull the key out, the car won't just shut down......

She needs either louder exhaust or an automatic ignition kill feature.
That is what the lawsuit is saying.

Who in their right mind walks away from their vehicle when it is running and figures it is going to turn itself off? If parked outside ,would a criminal simply be able to drive away?

No, you can't move the car out of park unless the fob is by the car.

Yes you can. All BMW's with Comfort Access allow this.

Lexus vehicles will keep running even without the key

It will warn you and say "key not detected"

but you can still drive it, if you shut it off you wont be able to start it again without the key

Well then that is stupid...it should shut the car off if the key is away from the car for more than 30 seconds...

no that would be stupid

so not only forgetting the keys at home you now have to abandon your car in the middle of the street unlock and run back home and grab your keys and run back to your car and hope no body stole your stuff

^i concur.  It's a safety concern, if the fuel cut out in the middle of a busy intersection?  car pile up because the manufacturer was trying to be SMRT and decided to cut the power....

Not so much,my Sonoma had a security feature ,that would cut the fuel pump if the  key computer chip wasn't near the column.Being a GM you have to know that it did that even though I had the key in the ignition.Who here hasn't ran out of gas,it's no big deal and hardly a safety issue.Based on the fact ICBC gives a discount for a "passive immobilizer" security system ,I'm surprised those vehicles aren't being hit with a higher insurance premium.

I think that it quits as soon as you attempt to put it into gear unless you have the fob, but I'll check with my son.

nah if the system is the same as my 2010 prius, which is very likely, it just throws a warning at you.

Maybe they should make it so the ignition only runs when the key is within proximity. This doesn't help of course if the FOB falls out of your pocket at some point and you leave without it but then again they came up with a system that doesn't allow the doors to lock if the FOB is inside the vehicle. Should be a no brainer.

Perhaps there was a warning system in the Lexus, but consider that the 79 year old may have been losing his hearing which may have been further reduced by ED medication.

I think people should know how their car works before they drive it.

Being she is a professor and school superintendent, and a woman (I realize I'm living dangerously here but..) you don't really expect her to do that, now do you??

Perhaps there was a warning system in the Lexus, but consider that the 79 year old may have been losing his hearing which may have been further reduced by ED medication.
I think it was the owner/woman who left it running and killed her attorney/lawyer companion.
I enjoyed the bolded comment line in any event.  Took me a second to catch what ED was!  lmao
