Just got my bill today.  It's about 16.85 for each service for a year. Then goes to just under 80 for all three after the first year. Thy did try and sneak a $100 digital install box charge on there though. I called and they took it off no questions asked.

Last day to get this offer is Monday February 28.

Oracle, how many HD channels does this come with?

Oh yah the HDPVR rental is rent to own. After three years, the PVR is yours to keep rent free.

BUMP

Telus came to our door today.

To preface, we have been with Shaw since they were Rogers and cable even became available. Never did any retentions stuff or anything. Have our home phone/internet/cable with them. Currently:

1 cable box (non-PVR) with basic channels
home phone basic
shaw extreme

$138/mo.

My mom noticed they are giving great deals to new customers and tried giving them a call. She said she was treated so rudely and shocked considering the length of term we have been with them.

Anyways, Telus showed up today with the following offer:

Optik TV/home phone/internet (15mbps I think?)
3 pvr's
150 channels (20 in HD)
Free xbox slim with kinect or a samsung galaxy tab

$93/mo first 6 months and then $117/mo. No contract.

What to do? Pretty often there are three tv's on in the house which scares me in terms of losing internet speed.

Tried calling Shaw but they don't seem like they care about retaining a long-term customer which really bothers me. The only thing that scares me is committing to Telus for 3 years.

What do you guys think?

Well it's all about the limits here.
You have 3xPVR's which means 6 possible active connections (1 recording and 1 live watch x3).
That 15MBps would wear down pretty thin.

That is unless you would be using their fiber to the home option, which I think is pretty stable. They set a static QoS for the TV's and then feed you 5MBPs internet usable.

Shaw never gives retention deals. My family gave up on them already, but we kept Shaw cause of the student discount they offer. I think it's 50% off selected things you choose on your package. We use to pay 150 now we are paying 90ish.

I'd switch.

If I didn't buy the two shaw PVR's, I'd have all my services with Telus right now...

We're still only paying $63/month for TV and Internet with Telus.
That's a single PVR though, we also have a good selection of channels.

That's the reason I switched too Kev.

Again, the major limit with Telus is that depending on your feed and the # of TVs you have, you may only be able to have 2 HD streams + 1 SD stream.
Meaning, if you are recording 2 HD shows at the same time, then you can't watch a live HD stream.

Telus is cheaper.

With with the 25Mps package I have and I watch a HD on demand movie it still glitches out sometimes and I have yet to watch a HD on demand movie that plays from start to finish without problems.

Ive tested my connection and I get around 20Mps down  2Mps up.   I only have one box not a pvr.

Now if you plan on using wireless forget about using the hardware telus gives you as its terrible.

after having a friend of mine who does this stuff for a living adjust the settings he just cant get it to be fast on wireless.   I ended up getting something else to feed me wireless

cheaper but its funny how Id rather have shaw.

I switched a few months ago. I think you will get three settop boxes with one being a pvr.

If you don't want to sign a contract...go on Craigslist and buy a PVR....I got one for $100.
You can also negotiate and see if you can get a regular box rental for free.

oh also I don't think you will get free xbox/tab+pvr without signing a 3yr contract for TV and internet.

as for internet bandwidth, will all 3 TV be watching HD? Since you are using Shaw Extreme, I will say your internet will be slower. But with Shaw saturated network, you might be faster with telus during peak hours (5pm-11pm).

Hey Kevo, ive got Telus and its good.

Have 1 pvr and 2 boxes (3 total) and havent ever exceeded the 3hd+1sd+internet limit. the net is faster than shaw was by far. though the router they give you is ok. i opted to use my own in conjunction.

i would take a look at their channel options if thats a major factor. i have found that you may have to take a package just to get one channel you want but you end up paying for the sd+hd packaged channels.

I dl alot of shows anyways, from AMC FX HBO etc. so it wasnt a big deal for us, just wanted the basic channels/sports/kids stuff. I have called into telus about 3 times with "issues" one being a connectivity issue which was rectified that day and a phone issue that was fixed over the phone and then a channel subscription issue which was also fixed and credits given with no hesitation.

No provider is perfect, but i was done with the usless techs and csr's at Shaw, absolutley fucking usless drones.

Also, are you guys on the Telus 15mbps plan or the turbo 25mbps plan?

  Kev

25mbps. it allows you to run combinations of wathcing an hd channel, recording 2, watching 1 sd and using the net and home phone.

i pay around $90.35 taxes in a month, compared to the $180 i would have been paying if i stayed with shaw and my discount dropped off.

I'm currently on the Your Pick HD and I think it's a pretty good deal. It gives you all the SD content of your theme packs + their HD content on top of the Essentials.

Definitely don't go with the default theme packs and pick your own.
I think by default they have MUSIC and ENTERTAINMENT packs, and they suck....choose ENTERTAINMENT EXTRA instead.
