Nova had a documentary on the quake tonite. Its amazing how fast they got all the info and experts together in a few weeks time. At the end, they said the west coast, Vancouver Island is going to be hit with an earthquake just as hard. When was the last time your employer had an earthquake drill?

From what I have read we are not as vulnerable to a tsunami because of the type of earthquake that would happen here and also the Island would shield the Lower Mainland somewhat. But I must admit, we sold our place in Richmond and moved out and that was one of the reasons. Richmond, Vancouver and surrounding areas will be devastated. I'm sure you cant get away unless you move to the Prairies but at least now I am fairly high up. Its the liquifaction effect that will sink Richmond. Very, scary scenarios. I guess we have to be prepared but not paranoid.

Not living in Richmond cuts down risk, but we never know if it will hit when we're driving through there.

^ So you won't go to the airport?
As scary as it sounded, people will be at places they think of the least when bad things happen. So I agree with what banjaboy said, just be prepared but not paranoid.

Just drive fast. That's your excuse: earthquake and tsunami avoidance/evasion!

Richmond is below sea level, It is a given, it will be gone. Downtown Vancouver will be gone as well. I work in the harbour Centre downtown, if a quake happens, I will be part of the Seabus terminal by Canada Place. I love that our breakwater is a huge ass island. Tofino will be toast, no big loss.

Liquefaction will affect different parts of Richmond in different ways. Ground movement in Japan Aftereffects in Christchurch New Zealand An old video but see a building sinking down a bit. The Canada Line should in theory be safe from liquefaction as it was built on a wide footing resting on piles driven deep into the earth. I don't know about many of the buildings however. Most of the highrises should be built on piles.

M Speed, I worked at the airport for 35 years as a mechanic, it was always on my mind to tell you the truth. Yes, when I fly I have to go to the airport of course but hopefully it wont happen then. But at least my odds are a little better not living there anymore. No, I have nothing against Richmond, enjoyed my 15 years living there until it just got too busy.

FYI, they found traces of radiation in the milk in Washington state (Spoken to be exact). It still at a very safe level for human consumption. So your choice.

Dont we have milk cows in the valley? if so, we have radiation here too. the way i look at it,most the people in europe faired well after the chernobyl incident we should be fine with the extra bit of radiation we're being exposed to.
Has anyone mentioed what will happen to the Fraser River if a tsunami hits us?

^ radiation was also found at SFU. I dont think the radiation in milk is confined just to Washington State cows.
