It's 288.

To get "2", the equation would need be expressed as 48 / ( 2 * (9+3))

I say 2.  Can be written as 48/2(9+3).  so you're dividing the top number by the bottom number.  But I'm no mathematician.

I see TZZ's point, if you were to write this formula in excel or whatever computer program it would have to be expressed as "48 / ( 2 * (9+3))" to get an answer = 2.  But I guess I'm even more old school than TZZ cuz I wrote it down old school math way.

if you enter the equation as in the OP in Excel (or in a scientific calculator), you'd get 288.

If you visiualize the equation as:

     48
----------
2 * (9+3)

Then you'd get 2 but because the equation is expressed in a linear fashion, then it should be 288

except I got 2 on my calculator and just typed it in linear fashion way.

What if BEDMAS was applied?

I get 288

I think the answer is 288, based on what I remember from math in school. BEDMAS...the order for doing this kind of stuff...Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

BEDMAS is what the scientific calculator works with.

if you enter the equation (in its original form) as 48 / 2 * ( 9+3); then you'd get 288
if you add the brackets (thus, altering the equation) to 48 / ( 2 * (9+3)), then you'd get 2

I input 48/2(9+3) in the calculator without the star b/w "2(9.." and I got 2.  Weird.

There is no way it's 2. It's 288.

48 (9 + 3)

That's interesting.  I did the same and got 2 as well.  But if I add the * after the 2, then I get 288.  Not sure what the logic is there.

the problem here is the notation I think
the person noted the original equation with the old school divide sign
if it was indeed 48 / 2 * (9+3) which gives 288, then following that notation there should be a multiplication sign there ie. "x"

so lets say the divide and an x would separate the groupings
then 2(9+3) would be its own group giving rise to 24 and the answer would then be 2...
