Since it appears that you are more looking for advice as to what to buy rather than looking to buy something from the members here, I have moved your thread to a more appropriate section

I'm a Nikon guy myself, however, the Canon SD-1400IS is a fantastic P&S camera for the money. You will take beautiful pictures with it, and it has 720p video as well. My friend has this exact camera and I'll vouch it's a nice little camera with great pictures. It's also the size of a credit card. Seriously.

My sister goes through a Canon a year though. Problems always pops up, usually a stuck zoom motor, and she goes and buys another one.
I recommend the Panasonics, although the flagship prosumer LX5 is probably a bit out of your price range. I loved my Fujifilm F20 back in the days, I'm not too familiar with their new lineup though.

I'm not familiar with point and shoots as the market seems to be oversaturated with models. My gf has a Canon S95 and it takes pretty nice photos. I'd recommend the smaller chain of camera stores for your purchase such as Broadway Camera or Kerrisdale Cameras

Broadway Camera will provide with you with good advice with a good selection of good cameras, but they do not have a good return policy, just so you're aware of it. But try different cameras out and when you find the one you really want, you'll find no need to return it. If you need special situations that you can quite test out in store, look at review sites like Steve's Digicams or DPReview to see sample low light shots and videos shot from the camera, etc. Try out menu functions to see how easy it is to navigate, or better yet if there are dedicated buttons for changing ISO, etc. You should be able to find a good camera in your price range, but as Matsuda said the market is oversaturated but there are some good cameras in the bunch. Canon is the most popular but don't disregard any of the other companies as well. Try them all out.

One thing to maybe think about is batteries ,are you going to need to charge the camera or do you just want to be able to throw fresh AA batteries in it.

Also don't let megapixels be a deciding factor!

Yup, you can have a gazillion megapixels but in the end the CCD sensor is just 1/2.33 of a inch. Instead, look for a camera with a good lens.
