http://www.autos.ca/general-news/mazda6-replacement-moves-to-japanMazda’s replacement for the current Mazda6, which is built in Michigan for the North American market, will be built in Japan. The Mazda6 is known as the Atenza in Japan. The company’s next “CD” midsize car will be built at Mazda’s Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture as part of ongoing efforts to increase global manufacturing efficiencies. “Currently, production of the Mazda6 exists in three locations: at our Hofu Plant in Japan, AutoAlliance International in Michigan, U.S.A., and at FAW Car Company Limited in Changhun, Jilin Province, China,” said Takashi Yamanouchi, president and CEO of Mazda. “Our intention is to transfer production of our next CD-car for North America from AAI and consolidate it at Hofu in order to improve production and investment efficiencies and optimize our business.” Yamanouchi said that the decision was made “after carefully assessing all risks and opportunities, including global needs, changing demand in North America, and exchange rate exposure. Going forward, Mazda will strive to maintain and grow our business in America.” AutoAlliance International (AAI) is a joint partnership of Mazda and Ford, which used to own the company. Yamanouchi said that Mazda is committed to working with Ford to identify potential future opportunities for the plant. The current North American Mazda6 will continue to be built in Michigan until the end of its current cycle plan. Mazda6 production began at AAI in 2002 and to date, the plant has built over 500,000 units.

Compared to the first gen? I've never been inside a first gen. I did remember thinking that the interior of the second gen screamed typical big American sedan, maybe the first gen was tighter compared to the made for American tastes second gen?

The car is just too big. People are going for smaller and more compact vehicles and the Mazda6 has a stretched out Ford frame that is very unappealing to modern markets.
