Looking at purchasing a TV for my mother who's moved from the hospital and into the seniors' lodge here to be wall mounted. Advice on LCD vs LED and recommendations, suggestions on specs to look for, brand names and features as well as where to buy are welcome. Many of you know a hell of a lot more about this stuff than I do and I think some of you are involved in selling/installing televisions. Thanks, Dennis

She'll be sitting pretty close as it's not a large room. It's digital cable with HD. From what I've observed, LED seems to give the sharpest and brightest picture. I'm considering this one that Visions has on for $848.00 LG 42" SMART TV Full HD 1080P 120HZ LED HDTV (42LV5400)

I would try and figure out how close to the TV she'll be before figuring out size. She might be better off with a smaller size like a 32" pr 37". We have a Samsung and we really like it. The guys at best buy told me that LG were the most warranty returned TVs amongst all the brands.

Hey Dennis, Id personally go with a samsung LED. I have a sam lcd 55" and its amazing. But im also sitting 10 ft+ away from it. I have a LG 26" lcd and its decent, but not nearly as crisp and sharp as my sammy. I think 40-42" is great if shes at 6-8 feet back. General rule is 1ft for 5 inches of diagonal, so 40" = 8ft @ 1080P Hope this helps.

That's a good rule of thumb...
That said, of you're also looking for a decent priced wallmount as well. I saw some really cheap ones at XS Cargo in Langley (although I'm sure most of the XS Cargo's carry them).

isn't digital HD cable only doing 720p? I'd still say LCD and LED will be the same. However LED is slimmer if it is wall mounted and not so in the way. As other had said, figure out how far she is from the TV then decide on the size. I got dizzy one time watching a 42" while I am only 4' away (in HK).

I still haven't purchased one. So many brand choices and features! I've also started to look at a getting a new TV for our house too whole I'm at it. I will check on the viewing distance where she'll be mainly watching. We're trying to get her a bigger room once one is available. Thanks to all for your suggestions and information.
Heavenclosed: I see that some models are now 240 Hz.

WOW, was just at costco last night and didnt see it in action. Is the 240hz as bad as the 120hz for making things look like they were filmed on a handycam?

the difference between 120 and 240 is so subtle its not worth the extra money. take your seating distance and divide by half and thats about the size you want. a panasonic plasma to me gives the best picture. samsung is way too overdone and oversaturated with color. i loved sonys and the picture but i think its made in mexico now. i would go with 1. sony 2.panasonic 3.samsung all 3 are good brands. wouldnt touch an LG, sharp is ok but it needs some color tuning.
thats my advice.. but then again what do i know? i only work with/on tvs every day

i agree with you 100% about plasmas, but argue the pioneer kuro is #1. my dad has a 60" he bought in 2009 and it still blows away alot of what ive seen. but yeah you cant go wrong with any of those 3. but yeah, LG and Sharp (i have both) suck in comparisson. My sammy is great after it was professionally tuned.

I didn't notice it in the store but I know what you're talking about. My friend's Samsung is super clear but that sort of shakiness is a real turnoff. Now I'm waiting for the 80"s to drop in price.

That is not a bad thing considering if you bought a Hencho En Mexico Sony TV in the states, you can bring it into Canada under NAFTA duty free!

My sammy is great after it was professionally tuned. i agree the pioneers are number 1. those TVs were sick. but i dont think you can buy them anymore and i believe Sharp is making their TVs now, LED LCDs called Sharp Elite. essentially Pioneer tech with Sharp name brand. but even then, those are pricey. what do you mean by professionally tuned, and by who? and to the OP, samsung usually sells alot more because it has a better value to the regular consumer. more features, less pricey, and what some people call a better picture (too saturated for my tastes). so all around its the best value you can get. however if you want strictly picture quality, i think sony wins. even on their lower end models the picture is better, however sony is usually a little bit more pricier.
