Your weight and size... I would start with a 156 cm board. If you're a true newbie, real question is, what kind of riding do you want to do? Do you want to mostly ride groomed trails or hit the park? If I would invest anything first, your best money should be spent on boots first. Get some of the best priced and most comfortable boot you can. I would then look at bindings, something light, and look at toe straps bindings. Board, don't go ridiculous, but I would look at something like a reverse camber board. Here is some great advice: http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/snowboard.html

Rei. Bwahahahha.
I've be riding for 18 years now. So this is just my opinion. Get the best boots you can afford. 32 makes amazing boots and are well priced. Outerwear is key too. Buy proper pants and a jacket with good venting and layer up with a good long johns, socks. Good goggles like dragon or Oakley and a helmet if your inclined. Board and bindings can really be whatever you want. Take a look at nitro or lib tech. Or even a good deal on a burton or forum. And gloves. Dakine, drop or burton with removable liners.
Board length will determine some stability and maneuverability. The longer more stable for speed and heavy powder. Shorter will be better for the park and have more pop.
Snowboarding can get expensive. But if you can buy used board and bindings that is prob your best option when u start.

as they mentioned, if you are really just starting, i would invest in some used stuff first until you really get the feel of riding. then you can invest in something that will work for you as its quite hard to determine what is right/comfortable to you now if you havent really gone. then after a season or two you can get the feel of what you really want, and trade up. and if you havent gone at all, make sure you have the following day off. lol.

Thanks for the input guys. I went a couple of times in Whistler renting all the stuff. It can be quite expensive renting the stuff over and over again. Might as well invest.
Now I have some info on which brand/size to get. I would probably get stuff from Craigslist first. Except the boots.
Thanks again!

Gortex is pretty good. So i've heard.. there are a bunch of stores down on W4th past Granville Island (or quite near it) you should check those stores out! You'll see a huge BillaBong sign on the way there. I know you're gonna CL your stuff, but you should head down there and try on some stuff to see exactly what you are looking for and also fittings too for boots, jackets etc etc. that's what i did.

Lol I'm picking up a new board right now!!! I'm getting a K2 Protohype. If you want to negotiate I have an older setup I'd be willing to let go for cheap. K2 Access wide 165 with Ride/Preston LX bindings. Although it may be a little too big for you unless you had size 13 shoes.

Buy your boots new. if its your first board just buy a used one that will work for you then once your comfortable riding spend the money on some nice gear.

^^I couldn't agree more with that statement. Buy brand new boots, get them sized correctly, and if anything, that should be the place you pay top dollar for.

Yeah new boots with proper fitment. If you are not comfortable you wont wanna be on the hill all day and wont enjoy it. Don't spare any expense on boots. A good used board will do anyone just fine and there is lots out there for sale cheap to help off set the cost of the boots.
