From the mazda.ca website:

Mazda5? ? city? ? ? ? hwy
auto? ? ? ?11.2L? ? ? ?8.3L
manual? ? 10.6L? ? ? ?8.0L

Mazda3? ? ?city? ? ? ?hwy
auto? ? ? ? 9.4L? ? ? ?7.0L
manual? ? ?9.2L? ? ? ?6.7L

both are for the 2.3L engine.? Note that the Mazda3 has a 5 speed auto while the Mazda5 has a 4 speed auto.

Besides the extra gear in the Mazda3 auto, the obvious difference between the 3 and 5 is about 500 pounds.

Here's my first 6 fillups.

31.120   9.077
28.417   9.941
32.668   8.647
31.633   8.930
31.846   8.870
32.851   8.599

First column MPG, second column L/100km.  Driving is about 50-50 City/Highway.  Getting just over 550km/tank before the light comes on, and putting about 45L in each time.  What's the tank, 50L or 55L?  I can never remember.  I think I worked out that we could get 600km/tank if we drove with the light on for a bit.

if u drive short trips only, u'll never get there... prob like 10-11L/100km

i notice that if i dun go to sch (30-45 min drive) and stay in richmond, the gas mileage worsen a heck lot

richmond driving only (240km/ half tank)
whereas i could get (280-320km/ half tank)

Mine is a 2.3.  This weekend i'm going to rip out that damn switch that keeps turning my AC on.  F*ck that's annoying.  I've been driving around with partially foggy windows when i'm alone in an effort to get the mileage to improve, but my wife drives with the defrost on most of the time so I don't have a good idea yet whether it'll make a huge difference or not.

I'm determined to get to the advertised highway rating.  If I can't, it'll be going to the dealer for a free tune-up.  My civic could easily break 45mpg, there's no reason this car shouldn't be able to break 35 and get close to 40.

[edit] Last tank was 34.5mpg.  MUCH better.  But I should be able to get higher, if I can only disable that stupid A/C.  The control head for the environmental controls proved to be too much to remove, so i'm probably going to have to wire in a switch direct to the A/C unit to disable it.  I'll probably use one of the unused switch covers down by the dashboard dimmer.

For short trip driving and both cars parked outside, I have been getting 14L/100km for my 5(ATX) and 12.3L/100km for my 3 sedan(MTX). I do use the "defog" setting most of the time on both cars.
