Hi, my fahter wants me to buy a digital camera with a budget of around $500 MAX. I was looking at sony digital cameras but cant make up my mind since i dont know much about them. For those who know about this can anyone tell me which cameras from any brand, that are good. Just tell me from your experience or from reviews that you know about. IF you can tell me the name and number of the camera. I want to buy by the start of next week. Any comments welcome.

www.steves-digicams.com <--one of the best DC review out there. the thing with Sony is not only that the cost of the camera is more, but the cost of memory is higher. I would suggest DC that uses SD card as they are the most common. Also if you are always on the go, get a DC that use off-shelf batteries will be a better choice. If you do decide to buy a Sony, you can PM me what you want as I might get you a better price.

www.dpreview.com <-- another one of the best DV review out there For a point and shoot cams, I would go with either Canon or Sony. Sony generally makes expensive cams, but they look damn good. Canon on the other hand, for the same value as a Sony cam, you would get more functions and features.

Canon's are always good value ... their line of SD300, SD400 and SD500 are great cameras for the price and all use SD Cards which are relatively well priced these days.

I have a Canon SD400 (5 megapixel) and I love it. I hear there is now an SD450 which is the same as mine but boasts an even larger LCD (2.5") and a longer battery life.

$500 will buy you a Panasonic Lumix FZ4. 4.0Mpix, Leica lens w/12x zoom, image stabilization. It's an awesome camera.
In terms of brands to consider, I like Canon, Olympus, Nikon, Fuji, Minolta, Kodak and Sony in that order.
You probably shouldn't listen to me where Sony is concerned because I hate Sony and I probably always give them an unfair shake. They try to force their inferior proprietary standards on the market and they force them on customers, who are invariably left paying double the price for accessories that are only interoperable with other Sony products. In the case of cameras, I am of course talking about MemoryStick.
If you can, I think you should also try to find a camera that uses AA batteries. AA NiMH batteries provide tremendous power, they're cost effective compared to the proprietary Li-Ion battery packs that most cameras use and if you're ever out of power and away from a charger, then you can put in alkaline or lithium AA's for immediate, temporary power.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/sd10.htmlThat is the camera that I have. I don't think they sell it anymore though. I bought mine in New West for $379 and I got a SD 256MB card at Future Shop for around $75. This is the store where I bought mine: http://www.fotofun.net/

I highly agree with Absinthe.... dpreview.com is a good source of info on d-cam's. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend that you check out the site.

....you might also want to check out Broadway Camera because they will price match most other competitors. I know in the past, they will actually pull out the competitor's flyers and show you the difference in what you'll save if you buy from Broadway Camera. There's one in Aberdeen Centre in Richmond and I think there's one on Broadway in Vancouver.
I would be cautious about buying at FutureShop....some of their salesman are as crappy as the salesman at Signature Mazda.

As a past employee that sold Digital Cameras at Future Shop ... I would have to agree with porter604. The training sucks and some people they let work there know nothing if not less than nothing (me excluded of course hahahahaha no). Seriously though, the people I worked with ... when they were asked questions, they look at the info sign (which isn't always correct either) and give them whatever info was on there lol

Just don't go to Futureshop looking for good advice. They just want the sale. I hate people who work for commission. I do go to Futureshop though, to price match and to run in and just pick up stuff I have already shopped around for.

The worst thing about FS isn't the fact that they are commission (actually, not everyone is on commission), but the fact that they need their employees to push the Product Service Plan extended warranty crap

I've played around with Sony T9 (the really thin one), Panasonic FX-8 (the one with anti-shaking hands function), and my own Canon IXUS 750 (also known as SD550 here i think and there's a cheaper version IXUS 55 which i don't know the model number here)...oh and also the new Sony 8.1megapixel one with touch screen (forgot the model number)...the sony ones are really good looking...panasonic i really like the anti-shaking hands function...all of these are around the $450-550 price range...so maybe these are some models you might want to look into...but for sure ask for screen protector...camera bag and other accessories when you make your purchase

That would be the N1. It's $650 now I think. For that price, I'd rather get Canon S80, much more features, but it's bulkier.
