has anyone ever tried using activated carbon to remove odours from the car?

i thought of this because i have something that i purchased in japan from a few years ago that the tour guide sold to us,
what it is is like a metal tray, inside it are big round black beads (probably the size of BB gun pellets), he said it will absorb odours and what not,
i suspect it is some form of carbon based materal, upon research i THINK it is activated carbon?
now i can't find the exact same item anymore but id certainly like to try something similar in the car

i searched on ebay for activated carbon, and theres some sellers selling bulk (5lb) amounts of activated carbon, in cylindrical shapes:

if i buy a bag of these things, and some how find a way to hold them in the car so that it wont fly around when it drops, but still have holes for air
would that work for "purifying" the air? or does activated carbon have to be used in some special way to achieve a odour removing effect?
a box of baking soda should remove any odors.

Fish aquarium shops have it in pouches of different sizes for in filters.  Put the pouches in your vents or wherever.

Might also attract the attention of the Police if you go through a roadblock. Devil

I bought the Escents cigarette lighter thingy and you put essential oils in it ... the heat releases the scent ... fabulous!
