So, while I was in Van this weekend, I was riding in my uncle's mazda6. 2.3L
I noticed that it had a little better pick up than the 3's, as did the wife.
BUT it's the same engine is it not???
I took a peek on the website and noticed a couple things, the 6 has more tq and a different fuel system??
also, 3rd gear has a different ratio.
so what's the deal??? or maybe it's my fat intake that robs the low end tq?

Different headers? I know the Miata has a different design with the 2.0L, and has 170hp, but the torque (140) is around 5000rpm.

does the 6 really have a different header?
although the 6 is heavier it felt noticebly a bit peppier...it was also stock vs my intake + exhaust.
or maybe it's the way he drives and it feeling different in the passenger side

With the intake you will lose some low end torque, but you gain on the top end. The 6 is placed higher in the lineup, so they wouldn't let the 3 best it.

yeah, I know the intake takes from low end tq, as does the exhaust.
I think the AEM showed better gains down low for tq.

Mazda6 has more torque. Simple as that. =) Mazda6: 154 lb. ft. @ 4000 rpm Mazda3: 150 lb. ft. @ 4000 rpm

I think the more important question is if the 6 2.3L has the same poor fuel economy

did you drive the two back to back? did you compare performance figures for both? gearing, drivetrain, emissions control devices, wheels, tires, etc etc....EVERYTHING contributes to the car being what it is! I personally think the M6 with 2.3 is a slug, noisy, and always seems to be working way too hard!!! My guess is that it's just your imagination...I definitly don't think the two compare very well and I drove them back to back today (I was bored)!

My bet is the drive by wire setting beside the 4ft-lb/3rd gear ratio difference. On my 5, it feels very powerful and responsive right at the beginning of the throttle for normal driving in the city. But when I put the paddle all the way down, there is not much different. I think Mazda is setting it up non-linearly to give driver impression of a powerful engine but in fact it's always doing more work that the driver thinks.
That's what I feel when I drove my 3 and 5 back to back. The 3's throttle felt more linear. However, my 5 is atx while the 3 was mtx.
Are they both mtx or atx?

2006 Mazda 3 vs. 6 stat numbers, show more of a difference.
Mazda 6: 160hp @ 6000 rpm? 155 @ 4000 lb-ft
Mazda 3: 160hp @ 6500 rpm? 150 @ 4500 lb-ft
Mazda 5: 157hp @ 6500rpm 148 @ 4500 lb-ft
