My other ride is a VP-Free

« on: October 10, 2006, 08:50:39 PM »

Hi folks, my first post on this fine forum. I've lurked a bit, but figured it was time to sign up.

The newest addition to our family arrived on Saturday!

'07 Sport GT, Luxury Package, Galaxy Grey.

She handles like a dream, has everything I could ever ask for, and she's my first brand new car! With that in mind I have a few novice questions if you don't mind pointing a n00b in the right directions.

- How can I bottle the smell it has now???
- I gotta tint the rear windows and was thinkin of going with a 35%. Any places in Vancouver recommended?
- I'd like to eventually get some roof racks, but am not too keen on the price tag at Mazda. Are there third party that will do the job?
- Are there any recommended stubby antennas? how is the reception with the sharkfins?
- What are some 'best-bang-for-your-buck" mods? It's an automatic due to being our commuter vehicle. Intake? Exhaust? Worth it?
- The interior seems to scratch really easily. Is there a way to buff them out, prevent or protect it?
- Is the Mazda 3 emblem on the back easy to remove or is it screwed through the panel?
- how long do I really have to keep it under 4000 RPM? It is killing me!
- Any other tips for a new Mazda owner?

Nice ride, welcome!

As for the tint, Larry Lee in Vancouver does an awesome job.  He did my tint and I have yet to find something wrong with it.  His number is posted in another  thread in here, and there are also more tint shops recommended in there too.

Welcome to the forums mr_fungle. That is a fantastic combo. There are no n00b questions here, because we're all still n00bs! Cheesy I'll take a stab at as many questions as possible:

Quote
How can I bottle the smell it has now???

Technically the new car smell is harmful to your health. A fine mix of plastics and chemicals. That being said, it's like crack. I can't get enough of it. I have yet to find anything that smells even remotely close. If you want to keep the smell as long as possible, keep your windows closed as much as possible; don't eat in your car; don't let leave things that could smell in your trunk (gym shoes etc).

Quote
- I gotta tint the rear windows and was thinkin of going with a 35%. Any places in Vancouver recommended?

Our sponsor on the forum N-Motion does window tinting. Visit their forum for pricing. Larry Lee also comes well recommended. He is a mobile tinter who can come directly to your home for the job. If you search for his name on the forum, you can find his contact details.

Quote
- I'd like to eventually get some roof racks, but am not too keen on the price tag at Mazda. Are there third party that will do the job?[

The dealer accessories tend to be pricey. I would sniff around Ebay or other online sources for a decent deal. Also, a member on our forums (Silver3) is selling his car. He has the roof rack installed, perhaps try shooting him a PM to see if he would part it out?

Quote
- Are there any recommended stubby antennas? how is the reception with the sharkfins?

There is no real brand of stubby that is preferred over another. Just go with your favourite style. If you prefer a sharkfin, they can be painted to match and offer very near stock reception. You also don't have to worry about anyone pulling off your antenna (it has happened).

Quote
- What are some 'best-bang-for-your-buck" mods? It's an automatic due to being our commuter vehicle. Intake? Exhaust? Worth it?

I'm going to let the others chime in regarding bang-for-the-buck mods. An intake will run you anywhere from $150-300, while an exhaust can go from approximately $400 installed for a custom, all the way to $700-800 for a name brand piece. Many dyno charts have been posted, but in general performance gains won't be huge. The real benefit comes in terms of aural pleasures. (Mind out of the gutter guys!)

Quote
- The interior seems to scratch really easily. Is there a way to buff them out, prevent or protect it?

Truthfully, I haven't found the magic answer myself. It does scuff quite easily, and the only way to avoid it is to practice careful entry and exit in the car.

Quote
- Is the Mazda 3 emblem on the back easy to remove or is it screwed through the panel?

I believe it is screwed in.

Quote
- how long do I really have to keep it under 4000 RPM? It is killing me!

Truthfully, I'm going to go against the grain and say break-in is overkill for modern production cars. Drive it like you stole it, right off the lot.

Quote
- Any other tips for a new Mazda owner?

Two main weaknesses of the car. Paint quality and carpet quality. If you can swing spending a few bucks, get the front end of your car covered in 3M film. It will go a long ways to preserving the appearance of your car. If you want to spend a little less and don't mind the look, a car bra would suffice.

I'd also recommend picking up a good set of rubber mats (either OEM or aftermarket). They will help preserve the rather thin carpets.

Aside from that, we hope to see you at a future meet! Keep the shiny side up Wink

welcome!
to answer some of ur questions

- Are there any recommended stubby antennas? how is the reception with the sharkfins?
go check out cartronix or other car accessories stores for stubby, as for sharkfins a lot of the members have it and they have better reception than stubby but slightly worse than stock (it's not really a big deal)

- What are some 'best-bang-for-your-buck" mods? It's an automatic due to being our commuter vehicle. Intake? Exhaust? Worth it?
lower ur car!! the CM springs that a lot of the members have only cost ~110cad including tax
or rear sway bar - reduce roll stiffness without sacraficing ride comfort

- Is the Mazda 3 emblem on the back easy to remove or is it screwed through the panel?
the mazda is screwed in but the '3' u can easily remove it using floss or fishing line

- how long do I really have to keep it under 4000 RPM? It is killing me!
depends on wut u believe in breaking in ur car, some ppl believe u should baby it for the first 1000km, but some ppl believe u should drive it like u normally would (which includes sometimes redline it)

- Any other tips for a new Mazda owner?
enjoy ur ride Grin

Got the OEM mats yesterday as well as the liner for the back. Cannot make myself stick a bra on the front and the 3M stuff is pretty pricey, think I'll have to skip this one...

Is there a way to mount the front license plate lower on the '07? It looks like the area below the bumper is a lot smaller than before, so I am not so sure the RX8 mount will work...

Also, how many people got the extended warranty. I am considering getting the extra 3 years.

Buy a full 6 pack of duct tape, clear tape, and masking tape, and leave it under the seat. The glue will heat up on hot days and you'll have new car smell.

Welcome to the site.? Enjoy the car.

1.? Mods: drive it a while and figure out what you think needs improvement.? If it's a daily stop-n-go commuter, you're probably more concerned about safety, comfort and fuel economy than performance... stuff like intake/exhaust can make your car noisier and not noticeably stronger - especially if you're going to be driving in the lower rpm ranges like stop n go.

2.? Break-in: eh... lots of schools of thought on this one.? As said, do a search; I would pull the car hard a few times in the first 1000 klicks when the engine is fully, 100%? warmed up (say, after 20-30 min driving at least).

Warranty:

How much does the extra warranty cost?? I think it's probably a money-losing proposition, unless you think "peace of mind" is really worth that much.? From mazda.ca, it appears that going to 72 months is $1200+ (plus taxes plus finance charges if applicable)

How many major repairs do you think you'll need within those 72 months?? If you think you'll blow two trannies in that period, have at it... but I have a bit more faith in the vehicle than that.? It takes a few moderate to major repairs before you recoup that extra warranty cost.? Keep in mind the milage limitation too.

Good points.

But also keep in mind that the engine isn't the only thing that needs to be properly broken-in: brakes, and transmission are other things that need to be broken-in as well.

So no hard braking, and quick shifting.

As for breaking-in the engine, just drive like you normally would.  That's my belief and the car has held-up well (so far, atleast).

And welcome to the site!  I'm sure you'll enjoy your car to no end.

welcome. for your questions, i'll give u a blunt answer so that there's no merry-go-round explanations.

- How can I bottle the smell it has now???
like everyone said, don't open the windows, don't put smelly things in the car (air fresher's, food, your underwear, etc etc)
the new car smell will probably last about 3 months or so depending on how often the doors are opened.

- I gotta tint the rear windows and was thinkin of going with a 35%. Any places in Vancouver recommended?
"Yau Bong" in Richmond in the alley beside yaohan center

- I'd like to eventually get some roof racks, but am not too keen on the price tag at Mazda. Are there third party that will do the job?
dealer one is the best one you can get....
for Thule, every bit costs.... the pads, the mounts, and the bars.... it will add up.

- Are there any recommended stubby antennas? how is the reception with the sharkfins?
stubby: no specific brand, ricer shops will have them.
sharkfin: best shit u can get for aftermarket.... but don't expect 100% reception compared to stock antenna. you'll probably get around 80-85%

- What are some 'best-bang-for-your-buck" mods? It's an automatic due to being our commuter vehicle. Intake? Exhaust? Worth it?
mods: to be honest, its not worth it.
intake: nice sporty/throaty sound and probably 1-2 hp here and there. it ain't gonna make a night and day difference.
exhaust: results same as intake...... with the exception that u might get pulled over for an loud exhaust if over 83dB

best-bang-for-your-buck: throttle body grounding. its *almost* free, and it will make your throttle more responsive.

- The interior seems to scratch really easily. Is there a way to buff them out, prevent or protect it?
nothing u can do...... try not to touch it

- Is the Mazda 3 emblem on the back easy to remove or is it screwed through the panel?
i believe there are holes in the back

- how long do I really have to keep it under 4000 RPM? It is killing me!
break-in: there are too many "techniques about breaking in an engine. of all of them, its hard to say which one works and which one doesn't. i can tell u one way, others will disagree. others can tell u another way, and i will disagree.
i've broken in 2 engines of which both were built as race engines. with the same theory, i'm going to break my 3rd engine but its a commercially built, everyday driven engine..... my 3

- Any other tips for a new Mazda owner?
enjoy the car..... the car itself is best-bang-for-your-buck

I think I have caught a nasty case of zoomzoomitis. My symptoms are chronic smiling, mind wandering, mouse hand repeatedly opening folder with pictures of new vehicle, and my right foot feels kind of heavy. I catch myself making up reasons to go anywhere, the further the better, and I'll usually take the long route there and double it back. Should I be worried?
