What do you guys think?

Given that RX-8's are such a superbly balanced car with awesome chassis, and sweet looks, would you want a more powerful engine?

From what I've heard and read, the rotary engine takes a bit of maintenance, and is somewhat unreliable given the recent recall.  With a more powerful albeit a heavier engine, do you think the balance would be disrupted?

are u suggesting engine swap to the 2.3 DSI turbo engine?

the rotary engine is what gives the rx8 its personally, so i dunno about changing that aspect of the car.
It is indeed a car that needs taking care of (maintenance), but it is a far jump compared to the original rx7 in terms of reliability

weight balance would be disrupted.  engineers have spent countless hours balancing the car out.  why put the 2.3L in the rx8 when there's a turbo kit out for that car?  it would make more sense to buy the turbo kit then to fit the 2.3L engine into the rx8.  You'd need a new tranny, ecu, wiring harness, drivetrain changes, custom engine mounts, front end frame modification to fit the engine in.  personally, I wouldn't want to have the 2.3L DISI from the factory.  The power band is too abrupt and could use a little more refining and since the 3's ECu is not the easiest to map out, so options are a bit limited at this time.  But given that it's a turbo setup, there are little things that can be done to smooth things out.  If you're talking about putting that engine into the 8 factory tuned...yeah it could make it faster but the true potentials of the engine are still limited by the ECU.  I think the engine at it's factory state would be hinder to the 8's performance...but with smoothing out the power band and getting rid of the 1,2,3rd gear limiter, we'll have to see what it does.  It has some potential but the cost outweighs the benefits.

If you're interested in fooling around with the 3's ECU settings, there is something you can buy that will allow you to do that.  Cost is about 1200USD.

I would rather have a bolt on kit....much cheaper, plus you get the satisfaction out of building your own car.  If I had the rx-8...I'd head straight to the aftermarket turbo kit.  Wouldn't even think about swaping it with the 2.3

RX-7 with LS1 swap FTW.
LS1 is old nowadays..LT1 is the way to go.

MZR in an RX8 would definetly throw the weight distribution off as the 13B is much lighter.....at least 100lb lighter
i'm pretty sure the average joe won't be able to pick up an MZR with his/her bear hands while s/he can definetly pick up a 13B with his/her bear hands

13B is mazda's equivalant to honda's 1.6L "torqueless wonder"
both engines are torqueless but provides a smoooooooooth powerband and the ease of rev....which is what rotaries are famous for.

so having that in a mazda3 would make the car sluggish and feel slow.

13B-REW?

20B?

I LawL at bolt-on turbo N/A motors that can barely do 1Bar.

Weight distribution aside, who would give up a 9-Grand rev motor for a torquey, powerful, boring piston engine?!
