drivers wanted?

Hey guys,
So... early this Monday morning, around 2:30am, I was heading towards New West. on Marine Drive, alone in my car and on the road. As I approached the corner of Marine and Byrne, one of the last lights before Queensborough, I braked to slow down entering the curve (I was NOT speeding). However... as I entered the curve, the back end hit some black ice, and the car's back end rotated around and went into an uncontrollable slide. It happened so fast that I didn't even have time to countersteer. Next thing I know, there's a loud bang, and the car is flying through the air. I would later be informed by the police that I had rolled 4-5 times before stopping in a ditch. Somehow, I stayed conscious throughout the entire crash, and I had been bracing myself into the seat as hard as possible. The airbag deployed while the car was bouncing around, and when it finally all stopped, I unbuckled myself and tried to get out. Realizing only then that the car was resting on the driver's side door, I started looking for my flashlight. It was pitch black in the ditch, I couldn't see anything but I know where I keep everything in my car, so I reached to open the center console. My iPod fell out, and somehow it turned on, creating a light just bright enough for me to see that it had fallen next to my flashlight. I grabbed my flashlight (thank God for that $120 flashlight... I could never justify buying it until that day), found the passenger door above me, unlocked it and start to climb out. I couldn't find my cell phone, so I ran into the street waving and screaming, looking for help. Finally, a truck came around the corner and stopped, rolled his window down. I ran over, and asked him to help. He was like, "yea... I'll call 911 down the street." I was in total shock and panic, and asked him not to leave - he told me to back off and drove off. I started looking for another car, and this time a Miata pulled over, and a nice couple got out, sat me down in their car and called 911. After that, it was all a blur... ambulances came to get me, put me on the stretcher and took me to hospital, where my parents and gf were waiting. They checked me out in the trauma room, stitched up my eye and a few hours later, discharged me.
I'm very lucky and thankful to be alive... I have to tell you guys - you made a damn good choice with the Mazda3 because it's got to be one of the safest cars around... only 1 airbag deployed - I don't have side airbags - and somehow, I escaped 5 end-to-end rolls without any major injuries. My entire body hurts still, and I'm scraped up a bit, but no broken bones. Anyway.. I don't think I'll be able to ever sit behind the wheel of a 3 again - the images of the car flying through the air from the driver's seat are forever burned in my mind. But the time I've had with the car and perusing these forums has been an enjoyable one. =)
Trust that you guys have bought a very good and safe car, my friends! When I am recovered, and able to get behind the wheel again, I will be looking for a wide, low and very vertically stable car with lots and lots of airbags =)
Take care, and drive safe! Zeph

Sounds crazy... glad to hear you're okay and that the safety features + rigidity of the car kept you in relatively good shape.
I think one thing that is always good to note is that if your car has a dash/console thermometer, take a quick glance at it every now and then. If it's within a few degrees of freezing, you should be very weary about black ice on the road. Considering the lower mainland gets a lot of precipitation in the winter, it pays to be extra vigilant. Coming back from Wings nights, there have been sections of Marine where I've hydroplaned due to heavy rain on straightaways and curves. I wouldn't be surprised if those sections turned to black ice in lower temps. The only thing you can really do is coast through it and not slow down or speed up.

lololol Sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh at your last sentence there. I can safely say we are all just happy to know that you are safe and will drive another day. We all know cars can be replaced. That being said, have any pictures of your car? Just curious. Remember that just because you don't have a 3 any more doesn't mean you aren't part of the club anymore. Glad you're alright.

you are ok and that's all that matters, hope you will get well soon so.......did the car slided sideways into a curb and then started rolling? i think u should drop ur next car to the ground and put a few heavy amps on the floor to make the CG very low, then it will never roll again

The main thing is that you are okay. Cars can be replaced, but you can't be.
Get better soon.

That curve before Byrne is an awkward one as it's is quite bumpy the G-forces get quite high. I take it every time I head home from Tony/Derrick/Thomas' place. Hopefully it is repaved soon.
I'm glad to hear you came out OK and wish you all the best in your purchase of another vehicle. And remember, ownership of a 3 has very little to do with being part of the club. Hope you stick around.

Yikes, Zeph. Sorry to hear about your car. But the most important thing is that it did its job and you are safe. Do let us know how things works out (ICBC, your next car, etc). And do keep in touch
