Make Derrick an admin, after all he is on here all the time anyway.

I second that.

He has helped me, and numerous other members, out so many times.  I think he'd make a good mod/admin.

For example, if you posted a questionable post that is directed to a member. Then thread is lock while that member cannot make a reply, while your comment stays. It is just a mess. And instead of out-right delete the post, they can edit it saying "content removed due to X reason". So members can see what action was taken and who took the action.

That's what we've been doing since the birth of this forum.  For this last one, I agree it shouldn't have been locked, and we would like to apologize.  The person in question had already told us the reason why he locked it (temporarily).

I do not agree that my suggestions are currently in use by the moderating team. Even if it is, it should be made official for all to know that they are in fact in use and should be followed by all members. To go into detail:

"1. If it is a minor infraction a warning could be issued to the poster to let them change the post themselves. The line between a minor and major infraction must be found by the moderating team and be enforced equally between all posts."

I do not know of, or should I have to know if this has taken place. It is behind the scenes work and should be kept out of the public eye. I cover the point where there has to be a level accepted between all administrators and moderators.

"2. If there is a major issue with a particular post, an administrator or moderator should edit or remove the post. Posts should be edited so that useful content is left intact, and only materials in question are changed."

Never happened. Went straight to lock. My major concern. I personally did not see any warnings, but they may have just been too passive. Refer to point 4.

"3. If a post is edited or removed, the editor must post their reasons for why the post was modified. This lets everybody know why such an action was taken, and helps prevent future problems."

Never happened. Nobody knows why the thread was locked and why an administrator or moderator took that action.

"4. All administration or moderation related actions should be clearly stated, preferably in the post in question. I recommenced using bold letters, even better if it is in another color rather than black."

To grow on this, if a post needs to be completely removed, the body of the post should be removed and replaced with the reasoning behind the removal. Just makes it easier for everybody to know what happened.

"5. Locking a thread should be a last resort, and should be discussed between administrators and moderators before any action is taken. Of course points 3 and 4 apply here."

It seems locking a thread is considered a first response instead of a last resort. As M Speed said, locking a thread doesn't do any good. Whoever makes the last post is basically "the winner" since nobody can reply.

That's pretty much the defined version of what we have in "the jungle".

Only after the fact.

Perhaps this "jungle" knowledge should be imparted onto the rest of the "animals".  Wink
