Japan Report: No Quelling Toyota AE86 Revival Rumors

Rumors about a revival of that brilliant, rear-drive, lightweight Toyota Corolla Sport coupe that starred in the ?80s continue to do make the rounds in Tokyo.

Known as the AE86, and sold in Japan variously as the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno, it was also a hit in Europe as the Corolla GT and sold in North America as the Corolla Sport (in DX, SR5, and GT-S trims, respectively). It?s a car that?s still number one among the toge zoku, Japan?s late night mountain racing tribe thanks to a wonderful, willful chassis that was just born to powerslide.

Senior factions with Toyota have been keen to bring the car back, but the sales and marketing teams have so far torpedoed it because they can?t believe it would sell.

First, of course, Toyota would need a good Corolla-class, rear-drive chassis, but sadly, there aren?t too many of those to go around right now. But still, the speculation about a modern day AE86 just won?t go away?

I don't think it will happen... here, anyways.  Toyota has systematically removed every sporty car in their North American line-up.  Anything performance-oriented would likely head towards Lexus (i.e. the LF-A/aka born-again Supra) and carry their price premium with it.

Rumoured New Toyota AE86 - More details.

Quote

Within days of announcing Toyota's formation of a "Committee to create interesting cars," this summer's Best Car Plus magazine reveals that the long-rumoured new AE86 type car has indeed been spawned by the group and should be in showrooms in the winter of 2008.

The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru.

And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money.

Okay, sounds promising and all, but I thought they were going to bring up the old design.

Of course they wouldn't bring out the old design. A good running AE86 typically go for between $300-700USD in Japan, and they are abundant like pests. No one would buy the new one if they are being made again.

I don't even think the concept of this car will go through. Even if the car will be made, it will not make legends like the Trueno, 180sx, and RX-7 did. The Scion is barely the car the Celica once was.

i'd be interested in getting one depending on how it drives and what not....if it ever came into production.  I'm hoping that it will.  Be a good little car to burn around the city in.

agreed but, mixed feelings on this. they can't possibily want AE lovers/likers to look at the new one the same way. top one looks a little like a infinity/nissan thingy and the bottom one looks like civic-ish/ celica. IMO. we'll see what happens (if anything at all). trying to think what catagory it'll fall under or maybe it'll start some shit up in the low end RWD? hmmm. my 2 cents are up
