Higher exposure, and steady footing. all one really needs for still life.
One of my friends just bought an 85mm f1.2 lens. Things expensive. I have yet to see any of his shots with it.
that's sweet can have some crazy shallow DOF

He admitted that he just got the lens because he likes the size of it. I think he really wanted the 50mm f1.4 or 1.8. I can't recall.

Who knew picking a DSLR was so hard...
I'm having the hardest time ever picking between an XTI or a D40X... But i'm leaning towards a D40x + 18-70 combo.

I was in the same postition Paolo, but then the XT went on sale for 399 LOL Futureshop made up my mind for me I figure that a average body with a few great lens will be of more use to me Personally I would go with the XTI; You'll thank yourself in the long run On a side note, the 50mm would be amazing for me considering that most of my pics are at night and the f/stop is amazing-Combo that with a 18-70 USM

Leighton is right. Nikon is cheaper. I can get the D40X with the 18-70 for $700 no tax...
Though I wouldn't mind the XTI, as I was gonna pair that up with a 17-40 F4L lens... But that would land me on the $1000 range.
Steve, I have a friend whose selling a 50mm F1.8 lens for Canon. If you want it let me know, but as far as I know, he's selling it with his 18-55 kit lens for $200 or something.

it is a typo, if u look at the pic it is only 28mm F/1.8 it is not a zoom lens
and don't get the 50mm 1.8, it is rather poor built and perform, although dirt cheap get 50mm 1.4, if you want a 50mm prime lens for just a little more

Pardon my ignorance, but why is the L series so much more...I know I know its the "professional" line but its like 3 times the price
Besides the color and status, is there anything significantly amazing- like the build quality?? Maybe Im just oblivious because I havent used one yet
btw leighton your posts are at 7777 lol

L is actually for Luxury Canon says "these lenses use special optical technologies [such as] Ultra-low Dispersion UD glass, Super Low Dispersion glass, Fluorite elements, and Aspherical elements to truly push the optical envelope." thus the superior image quality L lens are usually fast (big aperture), fast and silent focus (USM)

17-40 seems a little short for me as an only lens. If you're willing to spend a little more on one lens, I'd get the 17-55 f2.8 instead. It has a better range, it's faster, it has IS and USM. The only things it loses to the 17-40 are price and build quality.
If I were you, I'd just pick up a used walk around lens like a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, or Sigma 17-70. You may think getting an L is cool and all but imo, it's best if you use some cheaper (but very good) lenses first before deciding if you really want to spend more (although $515 for a 17-40 is a pretty sweet deal). Good luck with your choice and hope you end up using your dslr more than I did ;
