Just a quick question. Im thinking of getting a new Digital SLR camera. My dad, was asking, if the Rebel XT or the XTi is any better than the Nikon D which is a 10 megapixel camera. Anyone have any ideas?

I myself would choose Nikon D80 because of the all-around specs (longer battery life and better lens)
If u're picky about picture color and image quality, go for Canon Rebel (however, it suffers from poor battery life) XTi is the newest model with 10megapixels while XT has only 6??? i forgot now
XT is going on sale now

I'm looking at purchasing the D80 too... however, I've been wavering between the compact size and portability of the D40.

The XT is 8.2MP. Don't be too concerned about how many megapixels the camera is. Unless you are printing very large scale photos that require such high resolution, anything over 5-6MP is becoming overkill. As for the battery life comment, I own an XT and have never suffered poor battery life. I can take a a huge amount of photos in a day and not see the bar drop below full. If you are travelling, carry the small battery charger with you. Hardly a good justification to choose one camera over another IMO. In regards to the Nikon having a better lens, I can't say I have ever played with one, however, most kit lenses get replaced down the road anyways. For me, I would still choose a Canon due to the availability of used lenses. Should you wish to pick up some lenses down the road, you will find that around 75% of all used camera lenses for sale are Canon mounts. Kev

I would choose the D80 over the D40 if the option exists. The D40 does not have built-in Autofocus (it's built into the lens). Kev

D40>Rebel~D80>30D
I own a rebel and with my vertical grip holding 2 batteries, I change batteries on a MONTHLY basis.
I have NEVER had a problem with batteries. this is not a point and shoot, they don't run live view LCDs so batteries will not be an issue. ever. EVAR. EEEEVVAAAAARRRRRR. I think I changed my first battery after a month.
even shooting a wedding, where I'll take 300 shots batteries is not an issue.
IMHO, canon has a better lens line up. Nikon seems to have better ergonomics. Canon generally handles noise better
if you're planning on spending a lot of money, don't get an entry level SLR.
megapixels mean NOTHING on a DSLR unless, as Kev stated, you're blowing pictures up.
be aware, you will NEED photoshop. DSLRs are made to be post processed in a "digital darkroom"

I have already decided to get the Rebel XTi. My dad got it for me in Hong Kong for around 5,068 HK doller. Which is around 720 CAD here. Thats the one with the standard lens included in it.
