Kevin, is a designation necessary for any 'accountant position' out there? Do you have any suggestions of accounting jobs for someone who is majoring in accounting in university and is looking for accounting experience towards a CA license?

For CA students you would likely need to work in public practice to gain auditing experience. Therefore, the public practice firm would also need to be accredited by the CA organization. My brother is about to write his UFE, I could ask him more or if he has any hook-ups when he returns from Europe.
My company is a private organization and is better suited for CGA or CMA students. If you are currently in school and likely 3rd or 4th year, then you could get a job out there as an accountant. Generally accountant positions are for advanced level students pursuing designation. Analyst positions are generally reserved for designated employees.
Sorry for rambling, if you have anymore questions do feel free to post-up.

Yeah, my brother failed it last year and punched a hole in the wall. He was so disappointed. So now he is gearing up to take it again with some coaching from CA professors. It's a very difficult and strenuous exam. Watching him go through the program is kind of why I chose not to do it.

Well kinda sucks that you have only one chance a year to take it. How many days is it again? 3 day exam or something?
And if you fail 3 times....basically you have to do ALL your modules again....or something like that....

I think it is 2 days, can't remember. One day written case and the other technical, just like the CMA exam.

Sounds good Kev. My friend is aiming to become a CA, but will most likely end up doing CGA or CMA like most people. The CA designation is like the elite of all accountants. A couple of people I worked with tried the UFE, but failed. They refused to take the evaluation again because the first defeat was unbearable. I could only imagine.
So Kev, you are saying that private companies hire 3rd-4th year Business bachelors to perform accounting work? I know that my company only hires people who have completed their CGA or CMA programs. I never really understand how people can acquire experience in the accounting field before completing their accounting programs.

Yes, it's a very vicious cycle. I went through it myself when looking for an accounting job. Everything required 1-2 years experience to work in the industry. After a lot of rejection, I went through a temporary staffing agency that placed me at my current company for a short-term contract. While working there, they liked what they saw and asked me to come on board as a permanent employee. Working as a temp is uncertain and often you will get a job that you don't like or you feel is unrelated to your field, but one has to get their foot in the door somehow.
As for the requirements, so long as your friend's major for their bachelor is accounting and they are pursuing designation there is a strong possibility that he/she could land a job somewhere. It might start out as an accounting assistant position, however there are plenty of opportunities to ascend should the person show the work ethic and ability employers want.
