How difficult is it to remember to switch on headlights when it is dark?

Every night I notice cars with tail lights off. Is it because their cars have auto headlights on but they switched it off by mistake? Or they just forget about it? Just because their gauges are illuminated, they think their lights are on and they keep driving with DRLs only.

Maybe when driving on well lid streets, it's normal not to realize that only DRLs on, but I saw people on very dark streets driving with DRLs only and they dont wonder why their lights are so dim? Only when they hit brake you suddenly see this chrismas tree lit up in front of you :)

And why can't manufacturers illuminate the gauges only when headlights are switched-on?

Sorry for the ranting... I am done now :)

People are dumb and treat driving as their right. I've also seen cars with auto headlights where people turn the headlights to the off position. :fulloffuck:

With always on gauges, there's two modes: really bright so they can be read during the day and dim so they don't blind you at night. You'd think that if they don't get the message that the road ahead of them is not properly illuminated that getting eyes full of electrons would.

This is why Obama wanted to mandate non-defeatable automatic headlights standard in all cars.

I don't use Auto on my headlights for two reasons:

1)  If it's dark, Auto will turn on headlights before you start engine (and will remain on as you're cranking).  The voltage drop caused while the starter motor is working is not good for your HID ballasts.

2)  Auto was turning on my headlights when I entered the parkade at my work, all of the 1 minute to get to my parking spot and turning the car off (and vice versa exiting the parkade).  Repeated short cycle on/off is also not great for your HID ballasts.

On September 30, 2018 my mother passed away.  She was 100 years and 7 months old.  She'd always said she'd live to be 100 and so the additional 7 months was likely "just for good measure" she would have said.  She was an educated, "liberated woman" long before it became a newsworthy cause and raised her three daughters with the same values.  She taught school, then worked as a civilian for the army in Ottawa during the war and became quite adept at handling bold, brash officers and soldiers.  My parents were married, after the war, in Ottawa and later had four children.  They had known each other while growing up, being from nearby schools in Saskatchewan.
She remembered my father coming into town, as a boy, on a fancy, high stepping pony wearing a hat with a rattle snakeskin hat band.  Must have made an impression!
I came first, followed by 3 sisters, all of us obtained university degrees with our parents insistence, encouragement and assistance.

Later, when my father left building construction, they started and ran two hardware stores.  She was his equal partner and he couldn't have done it without her.  I'll never forget when some man, who came to the office, had the audacity to remark that he wanted to speak to the boss not a woman, because she was just a woman and wouldn't  know what she was talking about.  Was he in for a big surprise and an education.  I was about 14 and was shocked at his boldness and then laughed my ass off! His apology came rather quickly, once she had finished dressing him down.

We were in Rome, Italy at the time and, based on the time of her death and the time difference, were wending our way to the Trevi Fountain amid a horde of people.  Note:  Don't go to the Trevi Fountain on a Sunday unless you love crowds.  I got asked by quite a number of people while there to take their picture for them.  Made a wish, just in case it really works and to cover my chances.  We used Toonies, not Euros, for additional security for the wishes.
